BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 68 Iraqis have been killed and more than 56 wounded in a suicide bombing at a marketplace near a police station in a day of violence around Baghdad, officials said.

Police recruits were waiting in line outside the station in the heart of the city of Baquba Wednesday when a Toyota mini bus exploded at around 9:40 a.m. (0540 GMT).

Twenty-one passengers on board a bus passing by were all killed when the mini bus blew up, said Sa'ad al-Amalii, the director general of the Health Ministry.

Officials said they expect the toll in the to rise in what has been described as the deadliest single bombing since the handover of sovereignty in late June.

One local health official put the number of wounded at 70.

A recent entry in my journal:

I'm officially aware that I have grown de-sensitized to the continuing and unabatted violence in Iraq. I realize that I actually expect news like this now from Iraq where I once hoped (and prayed) it would dimish.

Once I would feel sad, angry, and concerned upon hearing such news but now I feel an eerie dead emptiness inside. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and the 15 months I have walked further and further down that road paved with the supposed good intentions of folks in power who profess to be good. I walk down this road not as a supporter of the war actions, but as a witness and a voice of dissent.

Thank God for this wake-up call. I have not yet reached the end of my own apathy road, I can still turn around.

My sadness returns as I realize that so many have reached the end of another road in the last 15 months, and in the long dirtnap of death they do not have the same recourse to walk the other way that I do.

My anger returns as I realize that this path was one that could have been totally avoided. An unneccessary waste of lives is a righteous cause to be angry about.

My concern returns, those responsbile for creating this fiasco seem unwilling to concede failure and take responsibility for their actions. They still act proud, pass the buck, and ask for trust in their judgement. Though history shows they should not be trusted.

I am not dead yet on the inside but I feel like I have had a near-miss.

chewbacca, you know as well as i that history shows nothing yet in this matter. if this iraq 'fiasco' comes off as a success bush will go down in history as a champion of democracy and therefore a great president. the caption will read: "despite strong party oposition, bush acted to overthrow the tyrant saddam and free his people so that they could share the same basic human rights as americans." needless to say, if iraq falls to terrorism, it won't go so well for bush.

what the media consistantly FAILS to report, however, are the vast changes in iraq. the people have culture and are happy. approval of their own government as opposed to being ruled by the US is good. they appreciate being able to listen to what music they choose, and go to plays. the death toll from these terrorist attacks is probably no higher than the people who were executed on saddams whims.

Yes Chewy, the Iraqis wew better off living in a land where women lived in constant fear of being plucked off the streets and raped. And if they resisted they would face a death at the hands of some torturer. A land where you could have your tongue ripped out in public for speaking your opinion, or fed to a plastic shredder. Yeah, those were the good old days, huh?

I thought women are more likely to be raped in America than anywhere else in the world.

In America the woman isn't automatically considered 50%, or more, guilty in any violent sexual attack she's a victim of as is commonly the case in most of the middle east. nor is there a gov't coverup protecting any male government official who engages in such activities, they may have friends who can pull strings, but they can't get off the hook completely. As an example, a cop here in Carlisle got convicted of raping truck-stop hookers a couple of weeks ago.

Why would you think that? A quick Google shows we're 9th on the list with both Canada and Australia ranking higher. Now 9th out of 65 certainly isn't a statistic to be proud of but women are not more likely to be raped in America than anywhere else in the world. You must have gotten some bad propaganda.
