I think a lesson to take from this article is war *may* have good consequences when it is all said and done, but the road to those consequences is damning. When considering lending support to a war effort, it must be done by weighing the end result by the path taken and rational for engaging in conflict.

No Duh, I belong to the war as a last resort camp myself.

I don't consider soldiers or servicemen evil at all, but politicians who start war not as a last resort or for self-defense, but for political gains and/or under false pretenses are about as evil as they come(IMO). They unleash suffering that will be consequential for a long time after a conflict is over.

It was supposed to be tounge 'n cheek, I thought I added a smiley.

But speaking of it, it doesn't say the age group that he extends his POV too. AFAIK, Military recruiters only go to Jr. and Sr. grades, by that time I guess they are hoping that they can make up there own minds.

But I dont think any one with a lick of sence thinks war is glorious. Necessary maybe.

I like Felix's bit-

War is not glorious, but freedom demands a high price.
Without freedom, then what do you have?
Without war, what are your options?

That makes alot of sence to me, thanks Felix.

I think Saddam was going towards that goal, with mass murding his own people and all.

Yeah, so why have military recruiters visiting schools in the first place?

Dang right about that. If killing is evil then man is the ultimate evil of the earth. Of course evil is just a perception of man's mind.

But I can't say I find this message: "Don't be sucked into believing in notions of war as glorious and patriotic." to be a false one. I'm sure recruiting has changed over the years, at least I hope so. But I do think recruiters still are painting a pretty picture. After all everyone else recruiting for whatever does. But recruiting for war is more severe than recruiting for a church I think.

Why is the war of independence equated with freedom? Wasn't it about not paying taxes to the queen oversees. How are taxes and freedom related as most of the poor people didn't have money to pay taxes so were probably worse off due to the losing sons and daughters. Yet it is painted and coated with a pretty picture of freedom. Freedom from what, "Paying taxes to an overseas government". Yet no one mentions the glorious word taxes in there independent speeches. We sacrificed our children for the freedom not to pay taxes to the queen. I guess it seems worth it today but no need to make it sound all rosy and peachy as many lost their children.

Independence would have eventually came to the Americans at any rate in another few decades without the war as it is costly in terms of policing, many countries were granted the freedom and recognition of not paying taxes to a Royal without any war. If Independence would have came about without war than would not the war have been a waste of lives. The people just needed some patience so war is not glorious, and many times are even a waste even the ones we consider good, and celebrate each year. Would it not be better to celebrate our achievements without war, as war basically means failure. It is the last resort because we failed at achieving something through a peaceful means.

WAR is failure.

So than what about WWII didn't we need that one? Well No , we could have taken Hitler out in WWI. Well what about WWI? Much tougher but how did Hitler come to power, I guess the Germans could have prevented it.

Most wars are not as they seem and there are usually other political factors at work controlled by people who do not have to fight.

PS: I don't give indepedance speeches do to large projectiles being hurled at the podiums.

Yeah, so why have military recruiters visiting schools in the first place?
The same reason products are advertised on TV, more or less.

I think the US army advertising budget is over $247,000,000.00.
