I have never used one before, but I believe they assist in helping the mage. More like a pet that can scout ahead of the party, and, if I'm correct, can aid in combat. Also if a familiar dies the mage looses 1 point of constitution perminantly.

I'm playing a mage at the minute and have a familar. To be honest it spends most of the time in my backback although I'm just out of Irencius Dungeon. The only real use for a familar is as a scout and the extra hit points you gain. During combat I make sure it's in my backpack incase it dies.

The best thing about a familiar is that it ads some HP to the mage's max.
However they are killed very easily and you will lose PERMANENTLY HP if it dies. So normally you won't let it out of your bag too many times. In my personal opinion, the additional HP are welcome in exchange for one less space in your bag. Also, depending on your alignment, you will get a different familiar with different aptitudes. Some may hide in shadows, others can cast invisibility ... These aptitudes are quite handy if you really need someone to scout, but nothing really to fall from the seat. Sometimes you can use a cheesy trick - while invisible the familiar can block a doorway so that you can take out the monsters from afar with missiles (assume that it is a small doorway or stairs). On the roleplaying side, you can ask him advice what to do to accomplish your mission. But you know the answers are ... well ... |
