Idiot questions about mod's

O.k., so i'm relatively poor with computers, and know nothing about patches and mods and such, and I've seen a lot of posts lately referring to mods and such like, "check out our new theif MOD" or something to that effect. What exactly is a MOD and how does it work? From what I've gathered, it's like, installing another character, or another quest or somthing? I'm sorry for the idiot questions again, but I haven't seen the 'search' option around here for quite some time...*looks under computer desk* nope, not there...*checks in floppy drive door* nope, not there either...*checks in pants* nope not there...*scans for local moderators, to scold sternly like an old crothcety lady about the lack of a search engine*...

A mod is a modification which changes the way something works (in this case SoA) mods can do all sorts of things like adding new NPCs etc.

The search function is gone.
