I've got a headache!
Sensory overload. DANGER Will Robinson! Danger. Have I got food for thought. Sorry about the misunderstanding Tambourineman, I thought that you were contemplating the long haul and hadn't starte BG yet. Oh, BTW, Baal is, I think an (old) Phoenician and Canaanite god that is purported to be either fertility or harvest based (in that respective pantheon). His/its demonising was by the early Christian faith. So the scholars tell me. Bugger! From what you guys have suggested, I may need to stop, think and start again. If I'm to get my money's worth out of the character. ------------------ Making running away an art form |

I hear you on that score, Lord Brass. I just restarted the game AGAIN last night....I swear, the ratio of characters I've created to the number of games I've actually beaten must be 20:1 or something, because each time I discover a 'flaw' I feel I have to start all over. This time it was sparked by the realization that I can backstab with a Longsword or Scimtar, and so I didn't need those 2 Weapon Points in Small Sword at all. So I deleted my Fighter (97 hitpoints at Level 7!) and made an exact copy of him, except I put those points into Bow instead. Sheeesh......

That's so true Six'. I haven't had BG for too long, and I must be on my sixth (?) character so far. The trouble is, when you've played for a little while you feel that you've got a good grasp of what you'd like for your character, in terms of XP, MI etc.
Soon as you've got it of course, you find something else and think "If only I'd known that at level 1!" Then you start again. If I may refer you to your own comments, what you said is true about character types in the game; thus, I've got a rather slow-developing triple-class to even things out. The thing is though, I'm not entirely happy with the people that I've got on the team. Replcements are difficult to find. (I don't even want to think about how this will play out in BGII.) ------------------ Making running away an art form |

I prefer to multiclass, especially if you want to play one character all the way through the entire BG series. At the end of the series the game is so ridiculously overpowered compared to PnP that the limit on how high a level you can reach almost seems absurd. Frankly, I just go ahead and remove the XP cap (I even do so in BG1/Tales, although I would finish the game well before hitting 161,000 XP anyway) because I want to have the most fun with the game--and for me that means continuing to reward my character with new levels for the XP he's earned. Sure, you take a little longer to level up with multiclass but you're never more than 1-2 levels behind the pure classes. Is that really such a big deal? If you're any good at all at this game you'll barely notice. The great thing about multiclass is that you get to fully develop in two classes--that is really gratifying. I'm not a big fan of dual classing. I can't stand having to start at the bottom again in the new class after reaching a relatively high level in the original class. And never progressing any farther in the class I switched from bugs me later.

I am probably going to play as multi class. Ranger and thief.
But should I be a elf or a half elf? Or perhaps something else? And yeah.. one more thing. Do you have to make your choise as to play multi class when you are creating you character? I mean.. Say you are playing as a ranger to level 7. Could you then, "multi classing" you character so you will start playing a ranger with level 7 and a thief at level 1? thanks ![]() [This message has been edited by Tambourineman (edited 10-09-2001).] |

Um... that sounds more like dual-classing to me. Ranger/thief isn't possible anyway, I believe.
When you multi-class, you pick "multi-class" as a class, then fighter/thief or whatever you want to be. The xp points you get are split between the two classes. |

Am I going to be a half-elf or a elf when I am going to play multi-class Ranger Thief.. And my ranger. What bow? Or maybe a crossbow? Please help! Thanks for all your help! |

I haven't played BG1 for a LOONG time but I have completed ToB twice with characters coming all the way through.
One was a paladin and one was a swashbuckler (a type of thief if you're wondering)/mage dual classed character. No worries with either on the thief front or the mage front come to think of it. If you are worried about the lack of a decent thief in SoA play multiplayer with two characters you create and make one a mage-you're sorted. Alternatively play a multiclassed thief you don't actually need to be too high a level to have 100 per cent in the two skills that really matter-find traps and pick locks. All your characters will be almost obscenely tough towards the end of SoA let alone ToB so it doesn't really matter what you play, but trust me a multi class thief is not a problem if you keep him out of harms way in ToB. |

A few pluses and minuses for you, Tambourineman:
Half-elves can get 18 on all their stats. Elves can get 19 DEX (which gives them a -1 THAC0 with ranged weapons) and 17 CON (which means you only get +3 HP per level, instead of the +4 you can get with 18 CON. This is only important for the Warrior classes, as the others ignore Constitutions higher than 16 anyway.) They both have infravision. Elves have a bit higher resistance to Sleep & Charm spells than Half-Elves. Elves have a minimum of 8 on their Intelligence and Charisma, so you can't really bottom out those areas to give points to your other ones. Elves are naturally skilled with the Bow (all types) and the Long Sword, meaning they get a +1 bonus to THAC0 and damage. The Varscona and both of Drizzt's scimtars are Long Swords. Human Rangers CAN in fact Dual-Class to Druid, but only in BG2. Elves and Half-Elves can Multiclass Ranger/Druid from BG1 on. Crossbows generally have better THAC0 and damage than bows, but they shoot much slower. The selection of magical bows is better than crossbows. ------------------ You know what I always say? "Always kill the mouthy one," that's what I always say. Hey! Why are you stabbing me??? |
