people main problem with him is also one of hid biggest strengths as a character, his attitude, he's brash, insulting, arrogant, headstrong and self assured, if you play the romance you get to see another side of him, and realise it's all a defense mechanism, he was abused by his father, his father refused to help sponsor him into the Order, but instead of giving up, and giving in to the pressure to quit he made his own way, by training himself (with help of course, but his allies are conveniently forgotten in his tales) to be a powerful fighter (lvl 7 is an extremely skilled and high level fighter in 99% of the forgotten realms) and then joined the priesthood, as a cleric of Helm(IIRC) letting his deeds earn him his position.

True he's a bastard to Keldorn when the elder knight is just trying to coach him along the right path, but he was refused by the Order because his father didn't buy him his way in, a perfectly understandable, if not easily forgiven response, Jan pushes the buttons of every character and so his ability to drive Annoyingman nuts is one of his finest moments, but he is despite his boorish attitude probably the best fleshed out NPC in the game

I really don't hold that much grudge against Anomen... might be because I've never actually kept him long enough in my party to get pissed off by his arrogant attitude, but still, he makes the game kinda amusing getting so upset when I tell him to shov it.

That's what I pretty much have said myself, it's obviously a defense mechanism. I haven't said it's actually a defense mechanism, I've just talked about how I was once like Anomen and that the reason why I acted that way was to get acceptance from my peers, and also to keep from getting hurt too much.

It's really a poor defense mechanism though.
I see right through those, and so does Illumina. HOWEVER ::grin:: Since most of the time my main char ISN'T Illumina (As there's no way in hell she's a Bhaalspawn.. she's a Chosen of several good deities already) nobody took the time to see through Anomen like the transparent guy he is. My char (Mara, usually) always asks him if he's been reading too many romance novels and leaves him in the Coronet standing there like an idiot claiming to want to find like-minded adventurers and fight injustice while Nalia, a damsel in distress, walks around pleading for help and Mara and Jahiera waltz right to the back rooms and free all the slaves. Oh well.
Actually, if you think about it, Anomen is one of the 'poor people' that Nalia accidentally talks down to.

Remember her opening speech?: I've helped lots of YOUR kind before! Is this the thanks I get?

Pretty much Anomen would see that as an insult, and wonder would it really be worth it to go off alone with this naive girl? Besides, like Anomen said himself, he's in search of a group. Gorion said so himself, a group is much safer to travel with than by yourself.

It's only common sense that he's looking for a group. Not to mention, maybe he was waiting for Nalia to get a few more people before he offered to help. She wasn't getting any responses when she went around the room.

All right, what's all this? The Official Rules of the Anti-Anomen Society state: To be a Member, all you have to do is post something that states what a arrogant, overrated, too-self-involved jerk he is or any other statement that you don't like him. Females can state how their skin crawls when ever he clumsily and inappropriately tries to court them. Members can also state, in reply to other members who plead his awful childhood, that Viconia was not exactly coddled by her horrid mother, either, and she turned out MUCH better. Any and all of these things, and other, more inventive ones, entitle the poster to put, "Member of the Ironworks Branch of the Anti-Anomen Society" in their sigs.
