BTW I meant the whole way the demon got into the gnome village, not the actual dealing with it part [ 07-24-2002, 09:36 AM: Message edited by: Morgeruat ]

Actually, the term "Balor" may have been inspired by both "Balrog" (LoTR) and the god of death from the Celtic mythology.
In the Celtic-Irish mythology, Balor is the god of murder and the king of the Fomorians, a race of giants. He was the son of Buarainech and the husband of Cethlenn. Balor had only one eye, which he kept closed because anything he looked at would die instantly. According to some prophesies, Balor would be killed by his own grandson. He locked his daughter Ethlinn in a crystal tower, to prevent her from getting pregnant. With the help of the druidess Birog, Cian of the Tuatha Dé Danann, managed to enter the tower and slept with Ethlinn. (Note how "Birog" so closely resembles "Balrog" as well.) She gave birth to a son, but when Balor learned of his existence he threw him in the ocean. Birog saved the boy and gave him to the sea god Manannan mac Lir, where he was raised. The boy, named Lugh Lamhfada (Lugh of the Long Arm), became a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann and led them in the second battle at Mag Tuireadh. In this second, and final battle, Balor killed King Nuada of the Tuatha Dé Danann with a glance from his eye. But when he opened his eye to kill his grandson Lugh, the latter managed to rip out Balor's eye with a sling and Balor fell dead to the ground. Just FYI. -Sazerac

If anyone is as lazy as me, all u need to do to kill tough enemies is to turn into a "slayer"!!! i killed the creature in the Svirfneblin Town turning into a slayer. I killed the 3 'evil' dragons turning into a slayer... and I killed Irenicus+the demi-lich turning into a slayer. Although it's cheap, it really works!!!

Micro management tip for this battle: Get two or three characters proficient in the use of bows(ie, Archers) and have a mage memorize teleportation field and breach. Teleportation field keeps the Balor away from your characters while they keep shooting it. Now pay close attention to the Balor's position. If it teleports to the upper left of the chamber while your characters are in the right side quickly try to move them out of the room until the field deactivates. Take your mage and move it along the pit to the bottom of the room. The Balor will become trapped walking up and down the ladder trying to get to the character. Now you can shoot/magic missile it to death. |

Slayer turning... pfffft. S-O overrated, so you hit as a +5 weapon, so what? 100 hp is nothing, Draw upon holy might is much much more useful. My widdle Elven warrior stat's with Draw upon holy might were 25-25-24 just as good as slayer change, no rep loss no damage over time... should at least get draw upon holy might back in ToB... bahhh.
Anyway, about the Balor, using the ring of free action, several healing potions and tank wielding a +3 weapon should make the fella quite a simply kill. |
