If this is your first time playing the game, then I would go with fighter/assasain. If you have played it and know sorta whats comin, be the Kensai/theif.

I don't really know actually.. What you think is best, or sounds better: take that one. You could always start a new game if the one you're playing with sucks big time.

Kensai->Thieves are only really viable if you have ToB installed. Otherwise, it will have a lot of penalties.
Consider a Berserker->Thief, Fighter/Thief or a Swashbuckler. |

Yes, swashbuckler would be good for what you are looking for. They have good theiving skills, and they have fighting bonuses.
I have a level 23? swashbuckler dual-weilding the Equilizer and Celestial Fury, he rocks! He is almost as good as my kensai! He does around 25 damage each hit. The only penalty Swashbucklers have is that they can't backstab.

The Swashbuckler comes highly recommended. Its almmost a fighter-theif and the loss of the backstab ability isn't really that bad. Try dueling one into a mage as well.

The ultimate power for the main char is a Mage/cleric multiclass. They get twice the spells. What I did with it was have the cleric part have mostly healing spells, and the mage part have mostly offensive attacking spells. works great!

play a non-human fighter/thief or fighter/mage/thief multiclass. You won't level up so fast, but you'll kick lots of butt. Especially with a F/M/T and ToB.
