Robin hood in the movies?
My vote was for the fox in Disney's Robin hood Although Kevin Costner and Errol Flynn were good as him too. Anyone have any other thoughts on who played any character? Loved Zoro, and the man in the iron mask suprised me at how well it was, even if it had Leo in it. ------------------ Drink and be merry Jimbo "Renegade, Rebel, and Rogue" |

Jimbo,
Robin Hood is so cool, but I HATED that film with bloody Kevin Costner in it - why did everyone like that film so much, it was DIRE! There was a much better film called 'Robin Hood' which was released about the same time but didn't get nearly as much publicity. GRRRRR! My favorite depiction of Robin Hood though, was a British TV show called 'Robin of Sherwood' which ran for a couple of series back in the '80s. It was very atmospheric - really good scenery, use of colour (red skies, that kind of thing) and beautiful music by Clannad which made the hair on the back of my neck stand up it was so haunting! That series summed up everything that Robin Hood should be - not some big budget piece of Hollywood tat with actors who do really really bad, completely unbelieveable pseudo-english accents!! Really, I'm sure that unless you're English, you don't realise how bad hollywood so-called 'english accents' really are - they are so off the mark it makes me cringe. I can't watch the thing. I could just put up with Winona Ryder in Dracula, the accent only became silly about 20 or so times in the film. (Epona looks around nervously, aware that silence has fallen as once more she rants and raves incoherently) Sorry Jimbo, that just all came spilling out there! ------------------ Time is an illusion. Errol Flynn will always be my favorite Robin Hood. I grew up watching his films so he holds the nestalgic title for me.

Errol Flynn was good.. but so was Sean Connery when he played the aging Robin Hood. Awww what a story!

bilqis my sweet, you spoke the only other name to have moved me as Robin Hood, but I doubted that many people would be aware of his portrayal. I have always loved Sean Connery as an actor.

Epona, Is that series still run at all as a re-run or late night event? I wonder if we'd ever get it here? FWIW, I thought Costner was a lousy Robin Hood too!
Relic, Bilqis: I love Sean Connery in almost anything, but that was a very good one, wasn't it? CB |

Cloudy, I don't know if the series has been screened anywhere else, but the fansite below advertises a fan convention in the states, so it must have a following! It has never to my knowledge been rerun on terrestrial TV here, but I did catch the whole thing again a couple of years ago on an English cable channel, Carlton Select, which I no longer get! Here is a link to a fansite which may be of interest (I only just found it, so can't give a personal opinion of its value!) http://www.klio.net/ROS/index.html ------------------ Time is an illusion. I recently saw the web site on the Robin Hood series you are talking about, sounds neat. I'll have to see if it is on BBC for stateside (we get one on our satelite dish, its BBC stateside?).
I liked Kevin Costner's version because it was great at getting chicks . For some reason when it came out, that song from it (by Brian Adams) and the movie were very popular with the ladies in Panama. We used to go to a disco and it was something the girls wanted to dance to, plus they never said no to coming over for movie night when we played that one. It was a chick flick that most of us GI's could handle I forgot all about the one where Sean Connery plays Robin Hood, that was a good one too! The reason for the fox in Disney's is that it is a good tale, and it has Roger Miller in it as bard (minstrel). Roger is one of the all time story tellers if you ask me, and it is from my childhood, so you know that sentimental thing. Plus my son likes it (hey the 5 year old has got style). Personally, I think Americans shouldn't even attempt another accent. We have are own, and don't need to screw up another countries too. But then again the states have so many accents, we can really mess with peoples minds. We had one unit that was a mix of New Jersy, New England, Mississippi, New Orleans, Texas, Georgia, Detroit, California, and Indiana. Maybe it was the beer that let us understand each other so well. ------------------ Drink and be merry Jimbo "Renegade, Rebel, and Rogue" |
