i personally LOVE dwarves. they kinda get screwed, though, since they can't do anything but fight and thieve. if i could make a dwarven mage with a decent paperdoll, i would. good version of Korgan as a Barbarian: Dwarven Thrower, Runehammer, K'logarath, Axe of the Unyielding, Shield of the Legion, White Dragon Scale, Ring of Gaxx, Ring of Earth Control, Helm of the Rock, Gauntlets of Extrodinary Specialization, Cloak of the Sewers, Boots of Speed. that pretty much makes you an untouchable killing machine. K'logarath and Runehammer are my personal faves, though the Axe of the Unyielding is good just for the regeneration, the AC, and the constitution bonus (like you need it). oh well. a dwarven barbarian is not for the fainthearted. his only drawback is plate mail and no magic. he can still kick YOUR butt. IMHO, the most excellent classes are:
1. Dual class ranger/CLERIC. Dual immediately at the beginning of the game.
a) He has bags of proficiences, so that he is able to fight effectively.
b) He is still a ranger so that it can put ++ into all cleric veapons and +++ into 2weapons.
c) He gets all cleric and all druid spells.
Summary: This class is a powerful cleric but also a valuable fighter. Let him heal and cast protective spells before a battle and then use him as a fighter.
2. Dual class kensai/MAGE. Dual at level 9.
a) He has high THAC0, i.e., he is a valuable fighter.
b) He can use all weapons and put +++++ into them (5+ is an advantage if you have lvl 50 rules installed). Train him in staves and axes (his ranged weapon is a throwing axe). Put ++ in his 2H weapons.
c) He does not lose any AC with respect to a pure mage. A pure mage can use bracers AC 3 as the best armor. The kensai/mage has bonus -2 to AC and can use Robe of Vecna or Robe of Good Magi (AC 5). AC 5 + the bonus = AC 3.
d) He is still a full sized mage.
Summary: This class has no disadvantages with respect to a pure mage but it is also a valuable fighter. Also, you will appreciate his high number of HP. He will fight if there is no reason for casting spells.

Elven multiclassed mage/thief. Solo with this one, and you'll level up so fast you'll get a nosebleed (xps for traps, locks, learning spells). Big fun in scouting around as a thief, and then using magic to stomp opponents.

Actually, if you have ToB installed, a multiclassed Cleric/Ranger is better than the dualclassed Ranger->Cleric.

Both can only specialise in their weapon proficiencies.

Both can cast spells from both the Druidic and Clerical pools.

However, the MC version can have Greater Whirlwinds, Hardiness, etc... ... The DC version cannot.

Also, if you are dualling your ranger straight away, they are sacrificing half an attack per round, which the MC ranger/cleric can gain once over level 13

Yes, but level 13 is too late for dualing - even for a group of three. Perhaps, only a solo character can affort it. For the same reason, I recommended to dual a kensai to a mage at level 9 and not to wait for bonuses at levels 12 and 13.

Exactly, which is why the MC ranger/cleric is advantageous with respect to number of attacks (unless you're prepared to wait for level 13).

if you have ToB installed, lvl 12 is fine for a kensai-mage solo dual. however, i have always believed that berserkers-mages are much more fun to use than kensai-mages. the berserk more than makes up for the extra skill, and makes you immune to most of the things that are death to soloers (maze, charm, confusion, etc.)

but that's just me.

As Yggdrasil said, the Multiclassed Thief/Mage is a powerhouse, especially when Elven. Slightly different is the Swashbuckler->Mage, useful for the AC and THAC0 bonuses that Multiclasses don't get, and it also reaches higher-level spells much more quickly than Multiclasses.

Multiclassed Thieves can eventually get 100% in all skills, but if you want to get the full Thief repotoire quickly, use Duals. A Swashbuckler->Mage and Assassin->Fighter make a devastating combo.
