I'm playing a straight thief and is it fun. The combo of prowling and backstab in combat is devistating, however I have critically failed a few times and killed myself with one blow. I joined the thieves underground and am seeing parts of the game I never did before. This game is so massive I wonder if I will ever see all of it. I'm trying to stay ballanced between tech and magic but it is hard I tend to go more on the tech side of things.

It took me 7 different characters to "get it all"(and I still have doubts I have got it all). I think you need atleast 4 very different characters to experience the game completely. This game is HUGE!
Oh, and I remember that one-hit-suicide thing. When I made my Gnome Sharpshooter. Selfheadshots suck.
For a thief, it's a nobrainer. Go to the tech side, get your Dexterity Rings, Skeleton Keys, Detection Sets and get to lootin'!

I have this game but never got going (couldnt figure out how to build a character and disliked the combat and non-existant NPC control). Its a pity as I really wanted to like the game due to the cool setting.

How would you guys go about starting up a game as a gunslinger in terms of skill allocation?

For a gunslinger, I recommend starting with Ascetic Background(the one that leaves you with half the gold but with a PE bonus), pumping DX and PE to 10 at the start, take a level in Dodge and a level in Firearms. Don't bother with Charisma on your first character. As you level, pump PE, DX, IN and ST(up to 16), and have Firearms as high as your stats allow it. At about level 5, as you get to the village, you should venture into the Tehcnology Crafting lines, Gunsmithy, Chemistry, Electronics and Explosives. What you do after that is pretty much up to you, but this start alone is really good for a solid character.

I found guns are not that effective in the beginning but build later. I would get one level in throwing and a level in explosives for the molitove cocktail. Perception and dex very important as well as int. for a gunslinger. If you want make a gunslinger with prowling and build it to master then you can pick things off from a long way away with the looking glass rifle and stay hidden. there are so many ways to go it's not even funny. The game defaults to real time combat but you can change that to turn based in the option menu. You will want to get two levels of electrical by level 10 so you can build the charged rings. Each ring gives you +2 dex. There are also mods out that let you manage your followers as they level up. The terra arcanum forum is a great resource.

While prowling i'm now backstabbing for 85 hit points a swing with the machanical dagger.

I started playing as a technologist. I'm thinking of dumping Virgil as he is annoying and quite unable to heal anyone but Dog at this point. The XP system is a bit stupid as either dog steals all the XP or I die from not having a good melee NPC, but otherwise I'm having fun

Is there any way for NPCs to learn found schematics? I have found some mechanical schematics and would like Magnus to learn them.

And will a technologist be able to use the teleport spell if I cheat to give it to him? Having to walk out of town before initiating long distance travel is a drag and doesnt exactly enhance the gameplay experience...

You have Dog, and you die becuase you don't have a good melee character? Umm... Just so you know, Dog is 11 times better than pretty much any other melee NPC, and I think 2x better than a melee PC, in the melee part.
Can't remember if NPCs can learn schematics, but I don't think they can.
A technologist will never be able to cast Teleport if he has 80 or more Technological Aptitude.
