I think you'll find that the Gothic games are in fact Third Person Perspective, the mighty stamar and subsequently more like Ultima 9: Ascension.

Whilst Arx Fatalis was indeed short, there are many nice little subquests, secrets and even an easter egg in the game. It is definitely worth pursuing and played even more beautifully through the second time around.

I suggest posting at the JoWood forums, TTLG forums or even to Arkane themselves regarding the question of its compatibility with your Nvidia drivers.

Cheers,
CD

P.S:
I've also recently dusted off Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny and are intending to give it another shot after being previously turned off. Whilst it is not as good as the original, it is another game made in the tradition of the first person RPG.

Gothic (2) is the game you want.

And you can toggle to either 1st person or 3rd person. But I too am a 1st person perspective gamer but felt that the Gothic 2 design team really gave the game that 1st person immersion flavor that I hunger for in RPGs.

Funny, but I ususally used the 3rd person POV unless I was in a dense forest or climbing a very narrow cliff edge. BTW, you can start with the more recent Gothic 2 and do just fine. I did that and was so impressed that I went backwards to Gothic 1. I loved both games.

One thing to watch out for, the Gothic controls are not standard and take some getting used to. But the time is well worth it. A tremendous game.

as far as dusting off the old gamers library. I delved into Might and Magic 7. And while the Brand New Dungeon Lords is missing a lot of features, it's still a fun game to play and will be really good after they get all their patches out.

Even though they have already been mentioned, I wanted to add my agreement to those who said three GREAT games: Gothic 2 (and I guess 1 as well), Arx Fatalis, and Ultima Underworld. Those are awesome games!

Plus, unlike game like Morrowind and Daggerfall (both of which I happen to like), Gothic 2, Arx Fatalis, and Ultima Underworld do not drag on endlessly--there is actually a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks for the replies. I enjoyed Gothic 1 but really prefer the high fantasy settings. Isnt Ultima Underworld an old DOS game?

I make no apologies about being a huge Gothic Fanboy. It's the price I pay for being one of the first detractors. But if you enjoyed Gothic 1 chances are you will love Gothic 2. Better story, better controls, better graphics, bigger world. Just about everyone who's play both rate number 2 better. And many (me included) have rated Gothic 2 as one of the all time best RPGs ever.

As far as the fantasy aspects, it has orcs, goblins, fire monsters, snow monsters, wizards, skeletins, magic, and dragons. It's missing elves and dwarves but to me there is enough high fantasy there to keep you happy.

BTW, I installed for the first time Ultima Underworld two computers ago. I was an apple man when Ultima U. first came out so I missed the boat. But I got it cheap about 4 years ago and tried to give it a go. I am not a graphics whore by any means but I just couldn't get into it. too bad for me.

Have a little patience... Elder Scrolls 4 and the next Gothic are coming up, and the screenshots promise total heaven.

I liked gothic better than gothic 2. Gothic 2 didnt really add anything but it made the world much larger which is good.

But gothic had a unique story and gothic 2 was standard sort of thing. Less grit. Also gothic had more voice actors and they were excellent. The same actors did gothic2 only fewer of them so all the people sound the same.
Dungeon lords is fun... ok but its not nearly as good as either gothic game. Even if they do finish it...

Yeah Stammer, Gothic 1 does have its advocates and they genearlly say what you say about 1 being more gritty than 2.

But I'm glad I played 2 first because then when I played 1, it was like going back in a time machine and looking at the past. I think I would have been a little sad if I played 1 first and then 2. For example weren't you sad when you saw one town was now the nest of a dragon. I, on the other hand saw the dragon nest first and then saw the town that exisited before. It was sorta neat.

Still, just quibbles ehh. Both Gothics are great and I believe have changed the way quality CRPGS are going to be made. Oblivion is going to have NPC with full schedules and one of the features they talk about is how you can overhear some of their conversations. While Gothic had these feature years ago, it was actully No One Lives Forever who first mastered the overheard conversation technique.

I can hardly wait for Oblivion and Gothic. It's too bad the Dungeon Lords folks weren't paying attention.
