Welcome to Ironworks!
There are many very good RPG's out there. Icewind Dale series, Baldur's Gate series, Planscape: Torment, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind etc. |

Thanks! I'm after something with guns and turn based combat if possible.

You might want to check out Arcanum then. The gameworld combines magic and technology, and it shares some similarities with the Fallout games. Pure Fallout clones are rare.
BTW, Welcome to Ironworksforum, David!

Welcome to the board!
Stratos is right, try Arcanum. It rocks...if you can get past the combat. They tried to implement a combat system like Fallout's, which is a good idea, the problem is that they did not do a good job of it. Otherwise, this game is awesome!

Yep, definitely Arcanum. Was the spiritual bastard child of what never was Fallout 3... that’s where I went to fill the void left after finishing fallout 2 and rinsing away the bitter aftertaste of tactics.
As for if its good? Well, for a good number of months I loved it... almost as much as Fallout 2. Then for an unexplained reason, I just stopped playing and lost all interest in it. I recently forced myself to pick it back up again, and what would you know... I was only 10 minutes away from finishing it anyway. That still leaves a good ratio of about the first 98% that I actually did enjoy to the bone. If your going to play it, be a mage... a fighter.... whatever you want but NOT modern weapons guy / weapon smith / gunman etc. This side of the game was terribly under balanced and it was almost imposable to play. Even now after finishing it 2.5 times (I adopted several alternate games that I played about mid way through just before reaching the last section in my main game) I would think twice about playing as one... its definitely a challenge. But yeah, all in all a very enjoyable game. Very good replay value, assumed you are patient enough to finnish a game before starting another, as opposed to running several games at once and simultaniously loosing your steam in the lot ![]() it can either be turned based or real time, depending on the setting you choose. All in all turn based is much better, and almost exactly the same as the Fallout system. The only real point of the real time setting is for later in the game when you are immensely powerful an immensely lazy and just want to crush everything in your path without having to wait for the enemies to take their turn. I recommend playing through as an Elf mage, or a Dwarf fighter / technologist. Those probably the most fun. Don't go a half ogre, as it is far too easy... and if your up for a challenge, go a gnome thief or a human gunman/technologist. I have tried both and they were extremely hard, but its up to you. hope this helps [ 05-02-2005, 10:30 AM: Message edited by: hayaku ] |

As an alternative to Arcanum or any other Infinity engine game, why not go retro and drift back into the heart and soul of Fallout by playing the game that it was loosely based on? - Wasteland.
It uses practically the same engine as the Bard's Tale games but is set in a post-apocalyptic setting. An original of it is fairly rare, but it can be bought in Interplay's pack the "Ultimate RPG Archives", featuring many other brilliant ol' classics. But you've got me curious now on the question of how many post-apocalyptic or non-fantasy turn based RPGs there actually are...we could possibly even list them! Hmm. Arcanum! That game rocks unbelieveably! I've just beaten it a month ago or the 4th or 5th time. Has anyone mentioned that it one of those extremely rare games where you can actually talk the ending fight to death? Where you can actually become evil and play that side? And with the new patch, the game is quite balanced. I find the most fun character to play a thieving human guntotter technologist diplomat. The game itself offers plenty of chances of roleplaying and pursuing sidequests on tons of different ways.
As for the comparison with Fallout, there are character histories you choose at the start, which closely resemble the trait system. The combat is dead on the same, maybe because it was actually made by the people who made the Fallouts. The atmosphere is at times quite like fallout, and the story is just as good, at times even better. No matter what anyone tells you, if you want something like Fallout 2, get Arcanum. If not, well, you can get Baldur's Gate I or II or Icewind Dale I or II. Or Planescape. Or Morrowind. Or Final Fantasy. Or just any other RPG there is.

Yeah I've got that somewhere. I had a go at it but the graphics turned me off. I might grit my teeth and have another crack at it. ![]()
