When I was small I spent hours in front of the black-white-screen, trying to kill the Balrog in Moria. Does anyone remember (or is old enough? ) this game? Orcs were small o's, and jellies j's where good since they had a lot of treasures... nostalgia!

Hello,
remember? Remember? Who needs to remember? They were a very important, significant, and evolutionary force in the history of the CRPG genre.

Those games are very much alive and well! Go to: Thangorodrim for the latest news!! For those not familiar, these games are minimal graphics, but high on strategy. If you can engage your imagination, then you will enjoy them.

I used to have a version of Angband called "Falcon's Eye" it was exactly the same. Just with graphics and a slightly nicer interface

Looks interesting. Might have a look at it.

Hello,
well, here's the real skinny on the Moria/Angband deal: its opensource and its creators won't let it be sold. The upshot is that there are literally hundreds of variants out there: with added graphics, without; with various sci-fi/fantasy themes, or just Tolkein; with added quests and extra features, others strictly classical; multiplayer and not; strictly Moria, or with many different story/features; etc., etc. Several important websites (out of dozens) would get you covered on what's out there (Thangorodrim has a links page, and is itself devoted to helping to develop variants).

If you can program, then you can very well make your very own variant! A word of caution, when I say low on graphics, imagination required, but very detailed, I really mean it. Games like these are the forefathers of ones like Diablo, but don't think for a minute that you'll see anything close (you won't see it, but you'll play "close") in the effects department.

and I thought I was the only one! aaah! I used to play together with my father. We slowly, slowly, worked our ways through the dungeons, always playing a mage, which was a pain in the beginning when you had like 7 HP. Making 'Detect evil' and a room filled with creatures light up before your eyes... I really miss it and now I found Baldurs Gate, so, well, but still! It was fun!

Alas, that must have been fun. I can but hope to have such fun with my kids....that must have been really fun!

Still, its a fun game in its own right (Hell, all you do in Diablo 2 and most of AD&D is walk around, kill things, and get stuff - big difference but for the eye candy).
