okay i'm really lame.
i can't figure out how to open locks without using "auto-attempt". is it just a matter of bouncing the tumbler thingies up and down until they stick? if so, how do you get them to stick? does it matter what order you do each tumbler?

help! i feel so... unthiefsie-like.

You click the button when the tumbler is at the highest point and then it sticks...

Click too soon or too late and your pick snaps.

tumblers go up slow and fast... key is to wait until it's going up slow and then click. Watch midway between down and up positions and don't click if the tumbler goes by fast.

Right when the tumbler hits the top... or right before. Then click. But first, move each tumbler up a couple of times. Get a feel for them. Then, try picking it. Makes life a whole lot easier.

thanks for the advice. i still don't seem to have a feel for it. i'm getting "easy" locks, but can't get any tumblers to work. i've used up all my lockpicks trying tho', so i guess i'll just have to go goblin hunting to get some more.

It's easier if you do it by sound. Use your pick to move the pins up some times without clicking, and listen to what happens. Look at the pins, when they go up at almost the same speed as your pick, that's the time the click will be easy. Find out what sound belongs to that. (it's sortof a ka-tsjink instead of just a ka )

I find the lockpicking and speechcraft mini-games to be rather frustrating. I understand how they work and all that, it's just it seems like they've overcomplicated the whole thing. I'm sure it'll grow on me, though.

If lockpicking is really bothering you, find the shrine of Nocturnal north-east of Leyawin to get the quest for the skeleton key. The key also gives a huge bonus to the security skill, thus making it quite useless...
