Wow... this topic has come along quite nicely.
I decree, in the name of Morrowind, that his topic shall be hte new "Newbie help topic" And personally, I find it hard to resist hte temptation to go to the Fine Alchemist in Balmora, buy about 100 each of Kwama Cuttles and Scales, and making oodles of cash with water walking potions... I wasn't saying you should do anything like that... |

Oh, boy... ~blush~ Now remember that I do NOT have a manual, and please don't anyone snicker too loudly; but I'm up to level 15, and need help throwing my first spell.
Just for example: I've bought the spell chameleon 10% to 30% for 60 seconds (or something like that. I'll just call it "Chameleon") and some other spells from the nice elf-lady, near the Vivec transport mage. So I thought I would practice... I hit the right mouse key to bring up menus, and left-clicked Chameleon (spell), thinking that as soon as I right-clicked out of the menus that the spell would be thrown. But, no: all I get is the Chameleon picture in my right 'equip' slot, with about 1/10 to 1/8 of the bar under the picture filled with red (looks like the red bar under a lockpick that only has 3 of 25 uses left). When I right-click out of the menus, nothing else happens. I've gotten rid of any equipped items (e.g., weapons and lockpicks) and mindlessly punched about every key on my keyboard, trying to find the one that will get Mr. Dufus Dunmer to cast that spell; but to no avail. My Magika is 75/75. My Intelligence is about 75 (although it doesn't feel like it right now). I've been running around for hours with that silly Chameleon picture laughing back at me from the equip slot. I give: how is this done? [ 11-28-2005, 09:15 AM: Message edited by: NobleNick ] |

When the spell is 'equipped' (i.e. the picture you mentioned is displayed), just left-click to cast. However, unless I'm greatly mistaken, the red bar underneath the picture is your chance to cast successfully (based on your relevant skill, for Chameleon this would be Illusion), so if it's low you'll probably miscast. You'll get a message telling you if this happens.

Thanks, Brayf!
Hmmm... Thought I had done this; but will retry. I did not notice any "mis-cast" messages. How do I know if I have succeeded? I assume I'll see the swirling lights of my character's successful cast; but that is just my assumption... On making oodles of money: It has taken a while to get to this point; but, thanks the advice of my good buddy, Sever, coupled with what has to be a glitch in the game, here is what I do: Go to Nalcarya (sp?); notice how much money she has (typically 3000); buy 20 "Master's Mortar and Pestals" for 18K (yes, I have enough gold to do this); sell the 20 back to her for 18K plus however much gold she had at the start minus 1 (just a roleplay thing --> I hate to leave a sucker dead broke); then leave to fleece the next merchant. I make about 7K off of 7 merchants, and gain about 5 levels in Merchantile, in about 20 minutes, every trip back to Balmora. You might be wondering how Nalcarya got 20 Master's Mortar and Pestals in the first place. Actually she has more than 70. It seems that when I buy up her stock, she places more on the shelf before I can sell them back. Therefore her stock on this item keeps creeping up. Same for diamonds, rubies and pearls. Other merchants do the same thing, but for different items. For at least three of the merchants I have to buy and sell thousands of Chitin arrows several times. I know diamonds are a very valuable ingredient; so buy and sell them to Nalcarya to jack up her stock of the item. The problem is that with diamonds, she always thinks I stole them from her. So, I buy 4 diamonds, try to sell them back, get them confiscated, pay my 250 gold fine, buy 8, try to sell them back, get them confiscated, pay fine, buy 16 .... By the time I've jacked Nalcarya's stock up to 64 diamonds, she has about 20K of **MY** gold; but I just buy and sell those mortars and pestles a few times and I have it all back (plus the 64 diamonds ![]() The further problem with doing the above is that my favorite magical flaming longsword was evidently ...er... lifted, as it was confiscated at Nalcarya's shop. I have searched the town for it, in vain. Will I find this in the evidence chest in Moonmoth fort? |

If you succeed at casting you'll see swirly lights, and with Chameleon a little status icon will appear in the bottom right corner with the rest.

Damn. Morrowind messes up my computer. It worked great for about a week but nowadays the computer crashes completely when I play Morrowind. I don't get it; all patches and drivers are up to date.

Thanks, again, Brayf!
I only left clicked once (or maybe twice) so can understand why the spell didn't cast. So, I guess I'll just keep left clicking until I get success. Sorry to hear of your problems, stratos. I have to reboot every once in a while, myself; but I think it is my video card at war with my operating system. (Woo Hoo! Post number 1,000 ! I would never have guessed that it would not be on the Icewind Dale forum... oh... um... can I go back to my last avatar?) [ 11-28-2005, 02:16 PM: Message edited by: NobleNick ] |

Nah dude. You're stuck with ol' four heads.
![]() Stratos, if your hardware's up to scratch, then it can only be software. Or, more specifically, junk/spyware. Might be time for a cleanup. *Edit: spelin. [ 11-29-2005, 05:57 AM: Message edited by: Sever ]

300 posts? Ackkk!! Guess I'll just have to get used to it.
Well, I finally figured out my problem: I needed to "R"eady my spell before trying to cast with the left click. In just a short minute I had run myself out of Magika. Wow! Hoptoad is FUN! |
