Hi all

just bought Game of the Year Edition.

I'd like to play a Fighter/Mage character (like i did in all D&D games - Baldur & Icewind)

but the choice here seems pretty hard !!

All those races & skills ...

Does the Dark Elf Battlemage stand for the standard Fighter/Mage, or should i choose a Redguard or a Nord ?

Or should i choose Spellsword or Nighblade ??

And if i should customize a class, which race-skills-sign do you experienced player recommand ?

Thanks in advance for your advices.

Don't think too much of of all those choices. Myself, i've always played the fighting type, one time i was a Redguard scout, another time a Knight, now i'm an archer or something like that. The point is, in the long run, it doesn't matter what you choose, eventually ALL your skills will go up, so a mage can become just as good a swordfighter as any other, and any dumb meleefighting character can become a deadly spellcaster. At this moment i'm a level 88 Dark Elf fighting type character, but all my skills have reached the highest level, so basically i can do anything.

From my experience of playing Fighter/Mage. I end up being more of a fighter than a mage.I hardly use any magic spell to combat enemies. So either you become a pure fighter or just a pure mage. However like Johnny said, it doesn't matter which skill you choose. All of them can be mastered.

Dark elf is pretty good. But I prefer Breton. female breton look nice in this game.

As with a lot of games, the magic seems a little underpowered compared to the fighter abilities.

But they are still useful.

It took me several attempts to create a character I really liked: if things don't seem to be working well, start a new one!

Oh, I never play the 'canned' classes, either: I like to make mine my own way...

I'd say best fighter/mage type's are the Breton's... Though nord's can be good too since they start out better fighter's, magic take's time to work up, so start with magical skill's as the main..

I beat the game with a Dark Elf Battlemage, and I think he is great. I also think Dark Elf is the best looking race in the game.

1. Ignore the predefined classes - each of them will always contain something that will not suit you. Create your own class (that means, "fill the form yourself").
2. In fact, it does not matter which race you will select for your class. You can develop any race according to the same plan and get a hero with the same abilities. The starting skill bonuses are only a temporary matter and their significance will vanish soon. They only decide which kind of problems/advantages you will have in the beginning of the game. On the other hand, the class/birthsing abilities, powers, and spells are important.
Therefore, select a class/birthsign, which suits you best as far as powers, etc., are considered. For a fighter/mage character, you can select a dark elf or a breton (naturally, even a breton can become a superior fighter if you will develop him such way) and give him the mage birthsign. You can also try atronach (a sorcerer) but beware of the inability to regenerate mana points, there are no "mana refillers" in Morrowind as we know them from Daggerfall - on the other hand, the 50% spell absorption is a powerful and never-vanishing ability. Note that the spell absorption in Morrowind is a "divine spell absorption" - you can "absorb" mana points even if you are fully saturated with mana - such mana points will not add to your mana points but the absorbed spell will not harm you. In the other words: 50% spell absorption = among others, 50% spell immunity. I cannot recommend apprentice because of the weaknesses of the apprentice and overpriced resistance spells in the game.
