the key difference in race is the reactions you get from npcs, some give you other quests or treat you better or worse depending on your race

Hmmm, I'd wondered about this, as the reactions that my first character (a Khajit) received were different from the Dark Elf I started next. However, I cannot be sure that the inclusion of the Speechcraft skill this time wasn't the reason. I know for a fact that a Breton I've been messing about with wasn't received too favourably until I received some training in that skill and he went up a level. NPC reactions shifted by seven marks - the amount of skill I'd bought in training. I'd just imagined that most Dunmer knew that Khajit weren't inherently trustworthy à la the manual description. Know I'm not so sure...

its dependent on a number of factors - speechcraft, charisma, their disposition towards you, your class, your race and probably some other factors too, their responses and reactions change depending on those thats why its such a great game because it plays subtly different for each character. As im a nord most people seem to trust me and be indifferent towards me generally, i havent had any major problems with interacting that i know other classes get in some towns (basically racial tensions )

I think race matters the most: at first I tried out a couple of races (namely orc and redguard) for my first warrior, while mantaining the same skills. I noticed a 6/7 points worsening of relations while playing the orcs when talking to Arille in Seyda Neen. so I think class matters most.

At the beginning, I think the differnces in the reaction value with different races depend mainly on your Personality-value. e.g., A Breton with Personality 40 has 45 reaction to most of the people, my Imperial Char with Personality 50 had 50 reaction to most of the people.

My observations on this matter were:
-For every two points of Personality your reaction to NPCs increases by 1.
-If you interact with one of your own race, you get a bonus of 5 to the reaction value
-If you join a faction, there are penalities in certain other factions (I had the impression, that when I joined the Imperial Legion, many of the Dunmer didnt like me as before)
