Ok i'm at the very begining, is there anything to do, besides finding the murder and the smugeler cave that is worth doing? Any tips on how to beat the smugler cave would be nice too i'm having trouble beeting the second guy, the mage.

Should probably put in what part of the begining, i have just gotten out of the registers office and am wondering around.

One small tip about fighting the mage in the Smugs cave. Stay out of touch range until he runs out of spell power, then beat him up.

Blade, "J" will take you to your journal. Read it closely during your nice island stay.

There are some excellent tips by all here, go a page or two back and read some! Starting games seems to be a popular subject

What kind of character do you have?

Blade,

there is couple way to get good starting up equipments... There is a key on the shelve before you leave the register office, which will open the door next door. Since there is no one there, you can loot everything there without getting caught.

Also, if you travel cross the bridge, keep going the same direction, to your left there is a hill you can go up to, near there (triggered by goign close to there) you will hear a scream. then you will fidn a corpse around there somewhere. There are good loot on this guy as well, read his journal (in his loot) to find out what went wrong.

This game is all about making decisions, there are just sooo many to make, so be careful at your decisions. And don't kill anyone in town unless its necessary, it might come back to haunt you later.

Explore the coast and islands between the Odai river and the bridge to EbonHeart (check your map). There's a couple of tombs and hideouts. You can find really good equipment in some of those.
You might stumble into some quest triggers too.

Also, all the 'X' on the map point to a special location.

watch out though, some main quest wants you to explore these tombs. so it won't be a good idea to explore it too earlier before you get the quest. or you might goof up and have to start all over again.

This is a good tactic for fighting magic users in general. Dodge untill they run out of magicka or whatever thay call it.

Regarding beating mage...

Use the poor enemy AI and the terrain to your advantage. With archery, it is not too difficult to keep something between you and a spellcaster while you shoot arrows at them. For the mage you are talking about, I got in a position to the side of the doorway in which he wasted all his magic shooting a wall, yet I was able to plug him full of arrows.

Lots. Look at your paper map. If there is an "X" on the map, there's something neat there...

Hmmm... Is that an X just below Seyda Neen? Why gosh, it surely is...

But be careful. Or you may end up in the belly of a fish.
