Rehan was surprised at the sudden change in Acacia. He knew she had a bristly side, but not one as commanding as this. His gawking was interrupted as he watched the scene unfold in front of him.

What is this... is the monster doing this? Horror took a hold of Rehan as realization came flooding through him. The bird! The bandit had said it looked like the bird was asleep on the tree... and disappeared quickly after. "Jared! We have to get them away from the tree!" Uncertain of whether it was airborne, Rehan took a deep breath and held it as he rushed over to Acacia to pick her up.

ooc: I'm not sure if the monster will prevent me from moving her so I didn't finish it off.

As the knees of the prisoner buckled, she realised too late that something was not quite right... what that something was, she had no time to ascertain.

For before she knew it, her eyelids were closing, the vapours were closing in on her and she found herself half-yawning, half-gasping as she too surrendered to the forces that had bested her.

"Run..."

Soft was her last mutter, and she could only pray that the others, if they had not heard her, would trust their senses that the sight of two collapsing figures would be enough to halt their footsteps...

Jared saw and expected Rehan to run to his partner and he followed close behind, but did not get as close as Rehan did, for he saw the attack coming as Rehan bent down to scoop Acacia into his arms.

"Tree! Look out!!"

And he jumped at Rehan, knocking him over from his kneeling position and they both tumbled to the ground.

A branch swished by overhead and as it passed, the black willow tree actually uprooted itself from the ground and with its powerful, large roots, raised itself over and on top of the bandit who was right at its trunk, then settled down over him, the bandit disappearing inside.

With the Black Willow now in attack mode, its aura of drowsiness it used to capture prey had been abandoned as it now sensed danger and worked at self-preservation. As it settled again into the ground, another limb reached down and grabbed the sleeping Acacia by the ankle and hauled her into the air. Another large branch came swinging downward to where the two men had fallen.

"Roll!", and Jared rolled as fast as he could to one side. He just realized that the short sword he had been holding onto had been dropped somewhere.

OOC>>>With the aura gone, it should not take Acacia too long to wake up, with all the action taking place.

The branch whooshed past his head as Rehan rolled at the command of Jared. Pulling out his sword, he looked from the tree to Acacia hanging in the air. "Damnit! How are we supposed to kill this thing?" Rehan slashed at the branches as they swung for him, desperately trying to keep himself from being caught.

"We need to get Acacia down!" Easier said than done... He thought wryly as he ducked just in time to miss a branch to his head. Rehan made the mistake of looking at Jared. The farmer had lost his sword and was making less progress than Rehan. The distraction though was all the tree needed as its branches caught the young man across the chest and threw him into a nearby tree. Pain exploded in his back as his consciousness threatened to ebb away.

Using the tree as support, Rehan pushed himself up and staggered to where Jared was. "Any ideas? I don't think we'll be able to just hack this thing apart..."

Jared was at his wit's end, and wondered what could possibly save their friend from being eaten by plant-life. He realized that the tree was raising up again and that he was in it's line of attack. He was about to be eaten! He rolled again, but a branch came crashing down in front of him and he got tangled in a limb for a moment by the arm before he could break out. The time it took him to do so made him miss the branch coming from behind him that knocked him forward several feet to land in a crash.

"I don't suppose you have the secret hidden ability to breathe fire on this thing, do you?"

Fire???

"That's it! Fire! Go get the fire from the bandit camp! I'll keep it too busy to eat her! Hurry!"

Jared had no idea if his plan really made any sense at all. He figured that this tree would cringe at fire just like any tree might, and it was the most effective tool he could think of. He'd smelled fire back at the camp when Acacia and he were coming to rescue Rehan, and he hoped that Rehan knew whether or not the campfire still burned. Jared did not remember ever seeing it, but he was busy trying to make a rescue, so that was understandable.

There! His sword! He jumped over to it, and latched on, but suddenly got grabbed by the waiste and hauled into the air several feet at a speed to make him nearly lose his lunch.

"AAAaaaaaiiiiiiiaaaaa!!!!"

The blankness of her mind was being shaken off literally, as she felt herself almost flying through the air. Bopping up and down crazily, she gagged as motion sickness now attacked her. What in the name of gods is going on here? As her mind and line of vision cleared, she peered around and found herself swinging about, her waist gripped tightly by the branches of this literally living tree.

Another glance showed her that all was not well. In the distance, she saw her abandoned longsword and that Rehan was dashing off - good for you, flee and get reinforcements if you want! But don't you come back on a fool's errand by yourself! - while Jared was barely being trampled to death before lifted airborne and dangled like a rag doll. In the fleeting moment where they came within a distance of some thirty feet apart, she whispered her incantations, feeling herself enveloped in a bath of cheering light... as Jared began to pull away, she saw him in a likewise position, the whiffs of glowing light circling his frantic expression.

Wildly, she now bent down and unsheathed her daggers, one of which she had fortunately remembered to fit back onto her right boot. Gripping them fiercely, she began scanning the surface of the malevolent monster which now sought their destruction.

Bark... leaves... branches... - she was losing hope fast, with the rapid confusion threatening to misguide her sense of direction - moss... more bark... twigs... but just at that moment, she blinked.

There were two gleaming pools in the scratchy surface that greeted her.

Eyes narrowing, she gritted her teeth as she saw the gloating hatred in those shiny orbs even as her body was being elevated towards an opening, which could only be this vile creature's mouth...

"Get ready to cushion your fall, Jared!" It was the only coherent yell she could now manage, her heart throbbing determinedly as she drew closer and closer to the cavern of darkness before her.

With a ferocious cry, she took aim and flung the daggers, one after another, at the eyes of the treacherous tree...

OOC: The spell she cast on herself and Jared is "Chant" Let's see what happens next...

Fire... have to find fire... Rehan's mind was numb as he ran through the marsh, concentrating only on the task at hand. The bandit camp soon came into view, the tent standing out boldly against the vegetation. Locating the campfire Jared mentioned, Rehan noticed a small wood pile and quickly lit a branch. Have to hurry... He ran back in the direction of the tree, careful to not trip and catch himself on fire.

He heard Acacia yell out and was glad she was awake. Not only was she safer with a conscious-working mind, she was more effective at getting this tree taken care of. Obviously, she had an idea. Suddenly, the entire tree shook with such violent force, he no longer could tell which way was up...then felt himself falling. It just occurred to him that his eyes were sealed shut. He kept them closed, but reached out and hit something hard with his arm which spun him around and then his leg was caught on something which slowed his fall down. Keeping his unsore arm reaching for limbs, he was hit in the stomach and tossed backwards into a branch that caught him but did not hold as he plummeted forward once again and down, but this time hit something large and mushy. Opening his eyes, he realized it was the marshy earth. He was safe! He had no idea where Acacia was, but he looked up and saw the trunk of teh black willow right beside him, and so he jumped up and tried to run the other way. The tree however was thrashing about, and there were limbs and branches crashing to the ground all over, most of them missing. Once, he got hit in the back by one of them and lost his footing, but the good thing about marsh country is that the landings are always cushioned. Still, he was sore from all the beatings....but he'd lost that sword again.

"Drat"!

The last vivid images she could recall as she tumbled through the air were the blackish pus that burst out from the punctured globes. Then, pellets of murky and foul-smelling fluid were raining upon her, even as the infuriated howls thundered against her eardrums. Several times, she took a beating on her flanks as the infuriated willow lashed out blindly. As the ground flew towards her, she wrapped her arms around her head groaned as her elbows hit the earth, rolling away as swiftly as she could away from the thrashing creature.

Amidst the chaos, she thought she saw Jared’s look of despair as if he were hunting for something… yes! Her mind regained orientation sharply.

Her sword… where was it?

In the distance, it winked at her seductively. She winced as she dragged her bruised body across the earth, wriggling whenever she felt a presence near her feet. The gooey mucus made her retch, but there was nothing for it now but to get to that blasted blade. Head throbbing, she forced herself into a crouching position now, momentarily surveying her own injuries before having to duck as yet another branch took a swing at her head.

The ground was shaking so tremendously, she wondered if the blow she had dealt had been mortal enough. Hurry up! Yes, this was no time to be pensive… the greater the danger, the quicker they would have to react. Inhaling deeply, she flung herself onto the marshy surface again and rolled herself towards the longsword, holding on to it for dear life.

Jared was nowhere in sight now.

Why stay on, when you don’t know if he’s already been killed? The cold and logical words of Adele rang in her ears, and her heart wavered. But the image of a lanky lad with blond hair and a guileless grin flashed across her mind. Rehan… he would not do that.

Suddenly, she blushed for herself. You cannot leave until you are sure, Acacia.

Pushing the memory of her earlier battle with the bandits aside, she stood up. Bringing the weight of her arms and blade upon the boughs that advanced upon her, she continued to hack and slash at any tendril she saw, until she was panting for breath and her arms were sore with exertion. Still she persevered, blotting out any negative thoughts and mindlessly tearing away at her foe.

If I ever live through this…

Desperation flowed through Rehan's body as he ran as fast as he could while trying to keep his footing in the swampy environment. The sounds of battle soon reached his ears as he drew closer. Hang on... I'm almost there. What a predicament he had himself in. This was supposed to just be a simple mission and ended up on a much grander scale. Which was better? Rehan couldn't answer as he continued his run.

Gray eyes took in the scene of Acacia desperately fending off the tree, which appeared to have been gravely wounded by her. Good, it no longer has them. Rehan weaved his way through the branches, thankful the tree was so focused on Acacia for the moment.

Don't mess this up Rehan... Screw this up and we all die... Closing in on the tree, Rehan could see two oozing orbs, which he assumed, were the monsters eyes. His death grip on the torch was released as he plunged it into the monsters already ruptured eyes. Fire slowly started to spread among the branches and trunk, causing the tree to thrash around madly. Rehan tried to move away, but was caught across the back by a flaming branch. The back of his shirt soon caught on fire.
