Is this thing supposed to disappear when you leave Skull Castle? I reloaded my game, and much to my chagrin, found the staff not in anyone's inventory. Hmm.. I may have to go back to an earlier save, for I believe it might be used later..

No it should not vanish. I actually equiped it. You will need it to unlock the force fielg that the lich has put at the entrance to the pyramid.
