I'm tired of spending so much money to determine what kind of things I have. I have an Oomphaz warlock with the Ancient Lore trait, but still can't identify anything.

I feel your pain; I'm on the same boat. Apparently, you can't get the artifacts skill until you advance a bit in the guild, from what I've heard. I've probably sold some good stuff, but I just can't bear paying $625 for an ID. argh!

After going up in guild level in the priest guild (I think it is 2nd level) you will be offered Ancient Lore. The next time you go up an experience level you can train in the artifact skill. Of course the higher the Artifact skill the more that can be identified.
