Area of effect spells can be cast at people, monsters, or a piece of turf. Don't matter. You can target just about anywhere. (As long as you can walk on it, you can target it.)

This may begin to sound like a broken record but definitly use the auto-pause. As far as spell casting goes there are some items that speed it up. For instance I had a mage wearing the Robe of Vecna and using the Staff of the Magi (I used Shadowkeeper, yes I cheat) and spells were cast pretty much instantly.
