I have the option of slaughtering the gnomes for the drow or sending the drow leader away and sparing them. Which is the best way to go? does it affect anything?

If you're good, tell Solaufein when you meet him to go away, since you'll be able to handle the situation yourself and when the svirfneblins arrive, tell them to gin\ve you the helmet as proof that you killed them.
