I'ma also add to try it out on blinded and held npcs. Their INability to turn around or see will negate the issue that you seem to ALWAYS need to be invisible and behind the target.
I've done a few successful backstabs from the side. I notice but it could have been my scripts running and my party casted a debilitating spell on the hostile already.... Anyways. Woohoo, a mage/thief with a staff to backstab with now....hrm. Must be nice.

I've backstabbed with Quarterstaves in BG2:SoA. Unfortunately, you can't backstab with the Staff of the Magi. "Weapon is inappropriate for backstabbing" or something.
Staff-Spear, Staff-Mace and Quarterstaff +1 all work fine as backstab devices, though. I'm now in ToB with this party and looking forward to discovering if the Staff of the Ram is useable. -- Nifft |
