i´d go for a ranger dual-classed to a cleric at level 8. you will be difficult to kill (lots of hit points, excellent ac), aren´t that much worse in a fight than straight fighter types and will be an excellent spellcaster with lots of options (you can also have iron skins up at all times when you can cast lvl 5 spells)

a kensai dual-classed to mage at level 9 is equally strong but more offense-orientated and very much weaker during the transition period.

For a newby I would definately start with the fighter/paladin for he has a good AC (good tip on the dexterity value) can use any weapon and armor. Has simple cure spell available and does not have to worry about encountering too much magic. Once you get the drift you will want to try other classes. Good luck!

Kai, I am playing an Elven Archer. Just finished the Underdark. I went through Watchers Keep before going into chapter three. Am now level 22. LOL talk about a long-range sniper! Give him/her 19 dexterity, boots of speed and GM in longbow. Few things get close enough to do any damage! =)
