In my opinion, I think that since Baulders gate was meant to be a trilogy of games, they used the Exp. Cap in Baulders one, so that you would not be so much stronger than the enemies that they had not yet designed for BGII. The same could apply for BGII, that the programmers wanted you to start off at the level they knew you would be at, so that they could design the monsters for the next edition.
If that is not the real reason, then it should be. That would convince me, anyway.

Well, IMHO, I see no point in having an experience cap. I mean, does Drizzt have an experience cap? It makes the game more thrilling if you can make the baddies 'explode' with one hit, instead of standing there missing or getting critical misses. Who cares about experience, if you have fun doing it, then do it!

Possibly another good reason is that if you were playing this live, with a real DM, he/she could analyze your party and make the needed adjustments to the game to always give the bad guys a little advantage. If it was as easy to go through as though a child could play it, then it would lose its meaning to play. What is the use, right?
So, since the programmers could not send along a live DM with the copy of BG, they had to set some pre-requisits, so that you was not so insanely strong that the value of the game and its adventure be lost.It is more fun when you actually have to think and act/react to a situation, just to stay alive. That is why we play.

I like the EXP CAP.It makes for a better game, and in my opinion more realistic. As there is truth in the statement:"You can only get so good".If I was you, I wouldn't take it off.

That's just me though.

Larry, You have a good point there buddy I never thought of it like that. I think I will leave it on just seems border line communistic to regulate how much one individual can accomplish.
GOOD ANSWERS ALL I have found the right place to ask questions about BGI. (TOTSC and BGII when I get them). Thank you for your thoughts.

When you install ToTSC the experience cap will be a little higher. I think Rangers can go to lv=10 and so forth. e I am playing a ranger that's all I've really looked at.

With DSOTSC it is even higher, but you lose some of this extra XP when you transfer to BG2
.
It's purely a game balance thing. Otherwise people would wander around the Anhkheg area (I forgot Area code - by the farm) tanking Anhkhegs to gain stupid amounts of XP to transfer to BG2
.
They had to leave something for you to gain in the sequel!!
