Steam or Ice? What's best?

Depends on your playing style Wookie. Mage if you don't know the game well.
Sorcorer if you want flexiability during the game. Mage if you want access to all the spells you can find, Sorcorer if you want a wide variety of spells aavailable for casting at any one time.

Ertai will probably disagree with me on this but I think that sorcerers give you less flexibility than mages, because they have a smaller pool of spells to ultimately choose from, so they usually end up casting a smaller number of different types of spells more often. Sorcerers are your quintessential battle mages, because a high level sorcerer can cast a spell like chain lightning 5+ times in a row and not many opponenents will be standing after that. But the spells that you might not use often but are important (divination, greater malison, lower resistance) you might not want to waste spell slots on them.

It's not a question of what is better, it's a question of how you like to play.

I agree the sorcerer is a way better battle mage. I think you have to make smart choices on which spells you want. For instance a level 21 sorcerer can cast 3 level 9 spells like 4 times. That means you can cast meteor swarm 4 times or time stop exc. That alone makes them a potent class. But ultimately its up to choices.

heh, you only need so many spells. socerer is a pretty good choice. Yorick is right (hehe), I favored mage myself because I just wanted to see what all spells are like. once you get used to the game, you will come to realize only a few of vast amount of spells are needed. if you are quite new, go for mage, once you are smooth, get socerer

That's if you remove the cap, of course.

Interesting. Ultimately then the sorcerer is a good for those who already have a good idea of what spells work best against the widest variety of opponents...BTW, does the sorcerer ever get access to Summon Hakeshar?

Sorcerer gets access to all the spells that mages can cast - it's a question of which ones he decides he is going to commit to memory each time he levels up. There's a limit to how much he can physically know and that limit is less than that of a mage. On the other hand he can cast more spells a day, and he can choose from ALL the spells he has available.
