since everyone nearly does what i usually do... i do have my own special spells i like to memorize...

group distractions:
horror (against groups... this simple spell works wonders)
emotion

triggers:
contingency: stoneskin
sequencer: use 3 magic missles spells that you can get a total of 75 damage instantly

offensive:
fireball for the pesky creature
abi-dazim horrid writing
magic missle
flame arrow- for trolls

defensive:
spell reflection (although you can get the cloak of cheats [img]smile.gif[/img] )
spell turning
stone skin
shapeshift into greater werewolf.. level 9 spell.. works wonders in healing when you are going to die

note: the staff of power can provide you a very neat protection spell that last a very long time

summoning:
skeletons and more skeletons

equip:
boots of haste
robe of vercona
amulet of power
2 "different" wizard rings so thats not a cheat
staff of power

well thats what i did since im a necro. that is why illusion spells were never my forte

Solo mage(I was Invoker) calls for the Staff of Magi(or whatever its called, haven't touched game in while). Use its equipping invisibility property constantly. When I fight cowled wizards in city, if they begin to cast a spell, turn invisible and the spell will fizzle unless its something that is area effect or is protective. Rather cheap, but it saved my skin several overwhelming fights in the game. Also cast sphere of chaos in a group of enemies, turn invisible and run out of its area effect. Fun! Remember, it is a little cheap.

It might just be that im a old pnp player but most of these suggestions don't have much imagination something like a stick cloud & skeletons togather combo there all either disable or damage not a combo of the two another good combo is hold or the like and a area of effect spell like ice storm the longer there there the more it hurts hope this helps even though I know its a old post.

You do not need to hold the enemy if they die within the first round anyway.

But seriously folks... in the beginning when your Mage is low level, Web and Spider Spawn is a good combination.

Finger of Death is good... when done in overkill. I had plenty of fun with this spell, the trick is... you have to combine it with Greater Malison and never cast it singularly, cast at least two. Also, do not waste it on low level enemies, but the tough ones( Dragons for example).

yeah that was a good point but there are alot of things you won't be able to talk out first round and for the long haul you need a good combo of spells just wish game were able to use spell like in pnp I usually picked spells that no one used and used them in abstract ways like enlarge/shrink shrink enemy's necklace's if they had one or enlarging something like a cork to block a passage way just more versital ways to use spells I guess is what im saying but bg is one imo the best d&d based rpg ive ever playes icewind dale rocks too
