I was going to call this bit "re-install problem" but my fingers did their own thing. Nice how they can do that! Prions, of course, are DNA fragments, some of which cause mad cow disease and similar uncurable ailments.
That being said, I have a problem. Or a prion, since it so far has been uncurable. I can't re-install Wiz 8 and I am out of ideas. I was cleaning up the hard drive and killing files, none of which I thought involved Wiz (none in the Sir-Teck dir). The game died. I tried a few things but ended up trying to uninstall. Nope, it would not. So emptied the folder and tried to re-install. Did this process twice (what a time waste) because I thought I might have a bad disk. I bought two copies of the game for this very reason. No luck. I think I saw this problem before so I may be missing something simple. It gets hung up on the auto-detect when I try to start. Frozen on a dark screen (or was it the auto-detect hardware screen?). I even had to reboot the damned computer a number of times, excuse my Italian. And no, I have not installed new hardware. (I did install one new software, a new McAfee anti-virus last month but have disabled it in case it was the problem). I use Win 98 SE. On one earlier occasion when I was adding Flame's mod I think I ran into the same problem, about a year ago. Forgot the solution I used then. Is there a certain file to kill so auto-detect can do its thing? What else may cause this? Any advice welcome. - Zig - [ 02-11-2006, 01:38 AM: Message edited by: Ziggurat ]

Hah! Got it. And it was stupid. I had to fool with the sound card settings to get MM7 to work. After much effort tying to reinstall Wiz 8, I returned the sound to its default values. When I started the game this time, auto-detect went to its screen, gave me video and sound options again and...poof. The game is working. I have save files in another dir but I think I'll just start from scratch. I consider this a bug in the 3Dsetup program, but ... who knows how often this happens with other games when you try to reinstall! And here I was starting to think it was a safedisk or other security feature.
