I started a new party for the Four Magic Dragons concept.

The question is how is it best to Dual?

This is the setup, with stats planned for the second (missed the stat problem with the first group:
VALK - Pri
SAM - Mage
RANGER - Alc
MONK - Psi

When is the best time to change - or is it better to stick with the multi-classes? I had planned to change over at the 5th lvl stage to pure caster, but doubts started creaping in about fighting/survival ability, especially as everyone will probably go back to "sticks & stones".

Input anyone?

I usuaaly do it the other way around; start as caster, switch at 6 so i have spells up to L3 and be able to develop magic again by L11 as hybrids.
Usually saving a couple levels' worth of XP in the Monastery by not leveling past 5 until exiting.

Yes, I agree with Scatter. Start as pure casters, get the level 3 spells so you have the four major buffs, and then class change.

When you do class change you then have two hybrids who can cast Element Shield and the other two can cast Soul Shield, covering your bases and all the buffs nicely.

The idea was to get to the 5th lvl, to get that over, change to pure cast to get to about lvl 10 or so - than change back to get the fighting advantage for the Rapax + spell (mostly the area ones like nox. & drain)

valk goes to priest at 5... make sure to start the valk with a mace.... use a class change from a priest with one to give her
sam goes to mage at 5 also... i would start with a monk and then class change to give the samurai a bo so he can build staff skill for the mage
ranger goes to alchemist at 5 i guess.... i would give him a sling for ranged attacks to build that skill for the alc and maybe dual daggers or something
monk to psi at 5 probably too... not sure about his weapons situation

The advantage of starting out as hybrids in the Monastery, then pure casters, then back to hybrids is you get you the 4 levs of no magic out of the way where you may not need it as much. In theory. I think it's worth a try. With Wild Rose's party, the Dracon breath is most effective there anyway and magic may not be needed. The downside is it is nice to have Armorplate, Encgamted Blade, etc., before hitting the road so the party may be weak until Arnika.

My favorite way would actually be a mix. I'd start Alchemist, Mage, Monk, Valkurie. Alchemist for the free potions and very high starting School skill, and Mage for the free 5 points in 4 Realms, and Fireball @L5--and both for Noxious Fumes @L5. The Valk and Monk can work combat skills, then as Priest continue fighting Mace, and as Psi work on Throwing/Sling. Except i'd probably have a Lord instead of the Valk.
