In Scott's Beginner Reference which is a sticky on the Board he refers to the Bardtender. I read it last night.
the relevant paragraph is.. "That said either of these classes could be utilized for a dual to Alchemists, Mages, or Psionics. because their attributes match. Again (as with the Alchemist Mage), consider the alchemist as the preliminary class but don’t switch until after you have element shield AND your Alchemy skill sufficiently high from potion mixing. With this “mixture” not only will you have proper defenses and healing but you’ll be able to honestly say that you have real roleplaying value: your character mixes his own drinks! (And if it were me it would be the Alchemist/Bard, “Bardtender?”, because of the “omnigun” problem with Gadgeteers, the fact that Freeze All is available later for Bards only, and because Bards can pick pockets.)" He's talking primarily about the Bard and Gadgeteer at first. Has anyone tried a Bardtender? Haven't seen Scott post recently but, if you are reading this, have you tried one? How did you get on? Some months back I tried a Solo Mook Bard (because of the resistances). At level 12 I changed to an Alchemist for one level to get a decent Stamina spell worked up, then switched back to Bard. Dexterity is an important attribute for both professions so semed to work OK. Anyway, what do you think about a Bardtender, viable? [ 08-23-2004, 09:00 AM: Message edited by: Krull ] |

Got one contest underway, 2 more contests under design now, one is awaiting some work from another person and the other I am testing out. Plus there's always the NPC contest which has no end date, as you well know. We'll see what happens. I'll have to study that post a bit and figure out just exactly what the "Bartender" idea is all about first. Edit: Opps! I mean "Bard"tender. [ 08-24-2004, 11:40 AM: Message edited by: Flamestryke ]

By the time you get Element Shield, switching to Bard will mean you will barely be able to play Heal All or Freeze Flesh by the time you're in AP.
Maybe with a full-size party it wouldn't matter so much, but still, just starting a level-dependent skill so late just doesn't make sense to me. I might think it would be interesting if you kept your Alchemist at L1 until she could mix the big potions and cast full-strength Stamina and Heal, and then start Barding at L2, but that would be kinda vulnerable unless you just stayed in Arnika and camped a lot waiting for Braffit and He-Li to restock. |

I've tried an Alchemist/Bard combo, it's not worth the retarded music IMO. Oh, and it takes sooooo long to just get Stamina working in the green at lvl >5. There's just no way of training water magic quickly. Bards work best when someone else does the Staminarizing. Maybe if you Solo, you could try it, but I'd rather just buy Stamina potions. I mean if you've only got one charater to equip, I'm sure you'll have no money problems anyway.

I changed an 18 or 20 (somewhere around there) bard to a thief (don't remember why, prob. to get stealth or l&t up) for one level then to alchemist. the game was pretty much over by then. I think I have around 5 alc levels and prob 100 alc skill from mixing (boring), but I haven't changed back to bard yet (so I can use bard stuff). not sure I will or not.
A real benefit is being able to cast stamina on yourself (doublely so while silenced) and not needing to hog equipment slots with potions. I suppose you could just take one level (earlier than lvl 18), cast water spells (prob. limited to combat acid and stam) enough to get 15 skill then mix potions until you are tired. having an extra cure wounds isn't bad either if you do this early. If I made fighter instead of thief I could run a bar, mix drinks, sing songs and be the bouncer. Pickpocketing myself just doesn't seem productive. |
