The Might and Magic series used to be one of my favorite. I still kind of think that MM3 was the best as it just had an excellent blend of things to see and do. The last M&M though was somewhat of a disappointment. They switched to a newer graphics engine (the previous three games all used the same engine) but the gameplay was a bit of a letdown. Exploring off the beaten track was a no-no as you could get stuck. I kept thinking while playing it that they really should have taken a look at Wizardry 8 when designing the game to see how a good RPG should be done. Especially the "cast until complete" spellcasting option. In the last Might and Magic you'd often have to repeatedly cast a healing spell on a character until they were fully healed.

Hello all!

Well, Ashara, I am a little in the dark here since the only qualifiers you give are "similar qualities as Wizardry" and RPG. So with the understanding that I don't know which qualities of Wizardry we are talking about and that the definition of RPG seems to change on a daily basis, I will make my leap into the void.... LOL

My choices are (of course) skewed to my preferences: must have swords, must have magic, 1st person viewpoint...occasionally I break that last one, and I will not play online (too many whiners) . YMMV!!!! Within groups, they are not necessarily in order....in fact, it would be almost impossible for me to order them :->.

I love!! (some are no longer available):
  • Morrowind
  • Tribunal (add-on to Morrowind)
  • Bloodmoon (add-on to Morrowind)
  • Daggerfall
  • Arena
****Note: All of the above are part of the Elder Scrolls series and are single character games---no parties***
  • Wizardry 8
  • Might and Magic (well, I only really loved 3 and 6.... maybe 7 lol, but I have them all)
  • A Bard's Tale I, II, III (I know, I know! They are old, old, old, but I loved them!!!)
I liked and really enjoyed:
  • Arx Fatalis
  • Divine Divinity (isometric view--or as I refer to it "little people")
  • Arcanum (same as Divine Divinity)
  • Wizards and Warriors
Now for the truly contentious part!

Games that I hated (with reasons)...not disliked, but truly loathed!
  • Baldur's Gate (boring....just plain boring....)
  • Gothic (boring, and I just despised most of the NPCs as they all seemed to be rather poor excuses for human beings)
  • Thief (sorry, but I don't want to play a whiney, sniveling, little self-serving twit!)
I don't know anything about the rest of these series since these games and their progeny will never darken my doorway again

Why include games I hated? Because I usually find it useful to see not only what someone liked but what they disliked....it gives me a better idea of what thing(s) another person is looking for in a game and whether we might agree or not Just like book reviews! LOL Do others love them? Of course! And, frankly, I wouldn't want it to be any other way....life would be dull indeed if we all agreed!

Are these all the RPGs I have played? Oh no.... although I might have accomplished a few more things in RL if they had been....LOL. No, these are the most memorable (either for good or bad) and/or the most recent.

Hope this helps!
ttfn,

lumie

Well, the game is set in a prison colony!

TESIII (aka, Morrowind) would have been the perfect follow-up to Wiz8 for me, if only it had of supported a party of characters instead of being single-character, but still, reckon you should check out the web site and have a look for yourself.

I agree with Wolfie. Morrowind is a beautiful, if too huge, game. I really missed having other characters. I don't need many, one or two others are enough (as in BaK).

thanks for all the ideas. i've been laid up due to surgury and i need the entertainment badly. i think a friend of mine is going to give me an old computor so that i can try wiz 7 - if i can figure out where to set it up. in the meantime, any additional thoughts for games that will play on windows xp and a pent 4 chip system - that plays wiz 8 very nicely after the memory boost - would be great.

Hello,

I've been following this thread for a while in the hopes that someone will list a game that I haven't heard of or haven't played. As it turns out, the games that people mention have also been my favorites- which I have played many times. For instance, Might and Magic 6,7, and 8 (9 is horrible), the Bard's Tale series, and Morrowind. The type of RPGs that I just listed are the type that I dearly love, and Wizardry 8 is absolutely fascinating and addicitive.

In any case, it seems as if the type of RPGs that are really great are fewer and farther between. Last week I passed by two gaming stores in the local mall that used to carry primarily PC games where I would browse for something new and interesting. Now they have a teeny tiny section for PC games with the rest Playstation, Gamecube, and Xbox. It really seems that the trend is moving away from the PC platform.

I wonder how many more games will follow in the footsteps of the multi-character, quest driven, non-linear, skill building, full of personality games that I love.

Anyway, just a thought. Sorry for the long post. Welcome any responses.

Star Trail was a great game.. by sirtech but much older. Part of the realms of arkania trilogy, unfortunatly the first and third games were nowhere near as good as the 2nd (star trail). Also if mmorpg's are your bag, dark age of camelot has alot of classic style quests and exloring that can be done apart from the pvp and multiplayer baggage(sp?).
