Just got this yesterday in the B Bin.
W1 to WVII and W Gold. Just entered the maze in W1 and had a few encounters. I have never played any Wizardy games before or "any" DOS Games this primative infact. The black and white maze has me "Strangely" captivated. Should I really be playing a game like this I ask myself? Anyhow, is it worth the trip going through all these prehistoric episodes or are some just not worth it?. |

I never did the really early ones. My first exposure was back when I was in Junior High and Wiz 5 Heart of the Maelstrom came out. It's basically the same as Wiz 1,2,3 (Wiz 4 was a different game written for the apple... go trebor and werdna)
I don't think that Wiz 5 is really all that necessary for your game play, but doing Wiz 6, Bane of the Cosmic Forge is still fun since it was the first one that let you see the names of spells instead of having to type in "Halito" or something like that... you can also transfer your Wiz 6 characters to Wiz 7, then to Wiz 8, so you can go the whole way with one set of people.

The difference between Wiz 7 and Wiz Gold is that Wiz Gold has alot of annoying features and additions that make it a pain to play if your used to the dos version.
Wiz 6 and 7 are two of my favorite games, and for those that have a system with pure dos mode(windows 98 or earlier), give them a shot. The story is more in depth than Wizardry 8 because everything has to be told to you in text instead of shown to you in flashy graphics. Wizardry 6 gives you the beginning of the story, and is just alot of fun. Wizardry 7 has roaming NPCs and the famous Gorrors.

I have played all of the Wizardry series. Starting back in 1986 or so. These were cutting edge back in the days of simple graphics and text adventures.
I still have the original triology on 5 1/4" disks for the Apple II. I also own the Ultimate Archives also, and have gone back and played all of them before Wiz 8 came out...

Does the Archive run well on the various Windoses et.al?
Is W-6 very much like W-7? I really liked W-7, it might be a fun project to play 6 to import into 7 and then on to 8... But mostly, Where can i get this Archive? |

I have the ultimate wiz archives CD, and I play them on Windows 2000. To be honest, they're a real pain in the ass. If I were on Windows 98, I'd have no problem with it, but Win2k, Win ME, and Win XP don't have native DOS compatibility (aka real mode), so you have to reboot from a boot disk (in the case of Win2k, the emergency disk, so that you can read NTFS).
If you're REALLY wanting to play them, I suppose you can look past a lot of that.. or, if you still have Win 98 or Win 95, you'll be fine. Best place to get the Ult Wiz Archives is Ebay.

To my question about wiz 7 and wiz gold - is wiz gold the same game as wiz 7, but with added features. what I mean is - is it the same story ? (I do have wiz gold, but not wiz 7)
The reason I ask, is that I am thinking about playing through it so I can import chars to wiz 8. I never played it when I got it. It was in one of those archives together with bard's tale 1,2,3 and some other games. I bought the archives because of the bard's tale games, I played those on my amiga, and I loved them. I had never played any wizardry games before. GodSlayer |
