As a matter of curiosity (I suspect it was a Sir Tech Game), and considering how CRPG players of party/group games wander across the breadth of available software, I wonder if anyone here can recall a CRPG in which the Scout/Ranger/Ninja/Thief (whatever called - the one with a specialty in back-stabbing) could be sent out ahead to hide in shadows and ambush an opposing party from behind after they passed, on their way to confront the main party.

It seems to me that it might've been Wiz7, Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and may have been why I used a Ninja in that game (which I hadn't done before, but also the time period for that game was before that Class was seen much in CRPG's). Right? Wrong? It HAS been 9 years since I played Wiz7!

None of the Wiz games, since 5 at least, let you split your party. Sounds like a nice trick, though.

Actually it was Wiz 6 Bane of the Cosmic Forge. One of the options before battle was "hide" so you can spend a round hiding, then the next round you'd backstab if you were a thief, or critical if you were a ninja.

Or you could choose to stay hidden, thereby making you unhittable during the battle.

I also remember this option and it was in Wiz 7. I know that my monk could hide as well as a few other professions. I will look in my old manual and see. That is somthing I have missed in Wiz 8, but this game is so great I have no complaints.

The original manual, box, floppies, etc. had been put away and I didn't think about looking up "shadows" or "hide" in the Wiz7 manual. But subsequent to making room for a new (color, finally) printer/ scanner/ copier, I reorganized the software shelves and Crusaders turned up. It was on three "High Density" floppies (1.2 MB's each).

I have looked at that manual. There is a "hide" option, and a "ninjatsu" skill that goes with it. But it looks like your back-stab specialist "hides" right there as part of the party, not slightly apart from them as I recall. Maybe I have two different games' features intermingled in my memory!

You may need to cast your mind back to a game called Bards Tale 3. In this game you were able to make your thief hide in the shadows during an encounter and with each passing round he could move an additional 10ft towards the enemy.

This game is ancient (I remember playing it on my C64), but I do not know of any recent games where you can sneak in the shadows as you explained.

That is probably why the recollection is so vague! The three BT Games are indeed Antiques. But they *were* among the earliest converted to MS-DOS. After having been poorly impressed with the low resolution graphics offered by IBM's CGA, I did add a SECOND computer to my electronic world, and it was a C64 (used, it came with a "300 Baud" Hayes Smartmodem in the collection of stuff -- and the rest is more history -- that bad boy led me to local BBS's and eventually to FidoNet).

I had BT-I for both platforms, but that one was such a big seller in the DOS form, that Electronic Arts quickly began developing from the start with MS-DOS systems in mind, and the rest of the distributors soon followed! (Which didn't make BT-II and BT-III work their way through re-writing into 8088 Assembly Code any faster!)
