Double Dmg against my folks

OK... so i'm fighting random baddies... savant troopers or whatnot, and with verbose combat messages on, i'm seeing lots of "blahblah hits YOUR SAMURAI for 2Xdmg", even though i'm not at all negatively affected by any conditions. The only thing i can think of is that all the monsters are berserking.. anyone have any thoughts on this?

Not uncommon, Monsters will hit you for more the 1X just like you can hit them for 2X.

I suppose it's possible, depending on your party formation, that they are actually behind you character(s), or you otherwise have your back to them.. Can really be hard to tell sometimes.. But I believe that striking someone from behind is an automatic 2x on damage if you hit. It usually tells you that they are attacking you FROM BEHIND or something to that effect though.

If you see a message saying:

"Savant Trooper punches Vi 2x - 12 damage"

This means that the enemy has attacked twice. It doesn't mean that you have sustained double damage. The reason the monsters are able to attack multiple times is because they are very fast and skilled in their weapon of choice.

hmmm... interesting... i see where it says they hit twice, this message is saying hit for 2xdmg... and my guys are backed into doorways and such and are safe from backshots... maybe they have powerstrike... they are mighty savant troopers after all
