Hi, I'm sure this has been asked but I don't understand how disarming traps works. Let's say I inspect it and get 2 green boxes. This still doesn't tell me what kind of trap this is. What is the trap list for? Thanks.

The list of diiferent traps appears at the side. Because you are starting out they are all tHE SAME KIND...the first one(darts if i remember correctly) You inspect to see the parts then scroll down the list of different traps to find the one that matches the parts that you have found, then disarm each part to the trap

quote: Thanks yet how does looking at the parts tell you what kind of trap it is? Let's say I somehow knew the trap was dars, do I then highlight darts and disarm? I just clicked the boxes and disarmed having no idea what kind of trap it was. Confused! |

First, if you have a char who can cast Divine Traps (not sure about the spell name), use it as this will improve chances that the trap is correctly identified. Second, select your rogue or ninja or whoever has highest traps/locks skill, then examine the trap (that's the magnifying glass icon I think). What will happen is that a set of squares will show up on the panel, indicating a sort of "best guess" as to the components of the traps. Now, scroll through the different types of traps (selections on the right side of the panel) until you find the trap type that matches the guess, i.e., parts of the trap clearly show up inside the squares, and nowhere else. Click on each part to disarm. Of course even if you correctly identify the trap, doesn't mean you will successfully disarm it -- depends on your locks/traps skill (ability will show up as a % on the left side of panel).
Disarming traps therefore depends on two things: (1) your ability to correctly identify the trap using examine and aided by spells if you have it; and (2)your ability to actually disarm the components, which is based on your locks/traps skill. Hope this helps. |

Thanks, I think I understand now. When you scroll the trap list on the right, the trap parts will appear in the highlighted square. I hope I'm right.

yup! that's right. * highlight the name of the trap on the right * the gears and tumblers rearrange * with the correct trap type, gears will match green boxes also, it won't hurt to make an obvious statement. when you are disarming each component, do it like you read a book. start with the upper left and work right. drop to the lower level and go left to right. i have found that inspecting during the process helps out on more complicated traps/locks. it seems to forestall "fumbling". Just out of curiosity I've been noticing that when my Rogue hits a trap that is more complicated I'll sometimes get yellow and red boxes. I'm going on the assumption that the yellow boxes are "maybes" and the red ones are "absolutely nots". So far it's worked for me but I'm not sure if those are the "real" designations for those colors.

Yes, you are correct.
Red = NOT in trap Green = IS in trap Yellow = ?? j |

Just thought I'd add this...
If you inspect a trap and you get red or yellow squares, I have found that if you inspect it again (and again if necessary) it will eventually give you green ones. Then you can scroll through the list of traps until you find the one that matches where the green squares are highlighted. |

It probably doesn't matter which order you disarm the mechanisms. At some point I thought I had better luck doing them reversed (lower right to left, upper right to left). Seems to work just as well. I also used to think the tumblers had a pattern..nope.
