My party was : NPC Monk/NPC Valkryie/Ranger/Fighter/Samurai/Gadgeteer/Priest/Wizard. I've played the game for days and my current mission was to retrieve Marten's Helm from the Sixth Bough in Trynton. At this point my party is pretty high level, I've cleared everything from the Monastery to the Swamp to Marten's Bluff, etc. I got into a bad spot walking through the Trynton/Arnika valley, some Geomancers and their Lesser Elemental jacked me up big time, along with some Plant monsters. I kill most of them, but suffer heavy casualties : 4 of my members are dead. I just recently got the Resurrection spell for my Priest (even though she was dead at this point) and didn't think it was that big of a deal. I would just run over to Trynton and grab a Resurrection Powder, raise my Priest and then have her raise everyone else and I'd be back on track again. Maybe I should of just reloaded but I wanted to keep the XP I just recently got and it was a long walk through the valley. Anyway, the valley was pretty monster free up to that point. I ran as fast as I could to Trynton. More monsters assailed me. I ran past them, there were too many of them and I was getting worked. I only had a Ranger/Gadgeteer/Fighter/Valkryie at this point, plus they were all ENCUMBERED by the load of my dead brethren (I found that out later on) making it near impossible for me to hit anything much less to much damage. FINALLY I make it to Trynton. I maneuver my party off of the cliff and into the ocean and around the back way to avoid anymore monsters. I dodge some flying insects and make it inside the Trynnie's sanctuary. I get to the potion guy and guess what? He's frickin' OUT OF RESURRECTION POWDER!! ARGGGH. Ok, I think, since I'm here anyway, I'll just go place the statue on the mantle to collect the key for Marten's Helm and then maybe try and make it for Crock's in the Swamp for the powder, hopefully I can outrun the critters there. I make my way over to the place where I place the statue on the for lack of a better word podium and get the key from the Shaman. I go to the sixth bough. I make it inside the building without an encounters, but there are 4 Rat Thieves inside that are easily dispatched. What? I don't see any Helm in here? Must be a way downstairs. I hazard a way downstairs and get inside, but some Rattkin show up right above me as I made my descent. Great, my passage up there is blocked, I'll have to figure that out later. I get inside and D'oh! the key has no lock to get inside. THEN I notice the trapdoor on the ceiling. D'oh again, I was supposed to come in through the ceiling! I make my way back up there and can't get around the Rattkin. I get my butt kicked and I reload a couple of times until I can go the alternate way of going down to the Trynton forest floor. I'll have to make my way around. (It was during the Rattkin encounters that I found out my encumbrance levels were way high). I rest and save in the little cubby area before descending to the floor and decide maybe to just go to the Swamp and get my party un-dead so that I can actually fight again. I get killed by a Brute Hogar. Reload. I can't make my way around the Brute Hogar so I rest and save a couple of times and rechance the Rattkin Village (maybe they took off over time). It's here where I'm scr*wed for the rest of the game. It turns out I accidentally reloaded an old QuickSave game when I was first at Tryton in the very same cubby hole. Both of the thumbnail images looked the same and I reloaded the wrong one and somehow resaved over it as well! I double check my saved games and my current party status has just been knocked back to MANY DAYS of Wizardry 8 playing!!! OH MAN AM I FUMING!!! Anyway, typing this out has made me feel better. I think I'll just restart so I can correct some character creation mistakes. ARGH!!!!! Oh and I'm new here. Hi everyone.

welcome to the board, and i am SO sorry that happened.

seems we are opposite sides of the same coin, tho. i have nearly 1 GB of save games, and still managed to do the same thing you did. altho, i didn't have to go back days, because of all the others i had...

i was just sitting there thinking how kind lady fortune is to idiots, and read your post. it brought back many memories. it was because i have such a tendency to do stuff like that, that i became the gamesave queen.

well, like you said, you can use the mistake to your advantage and correct some things while you have the opportunity. and you DID learn a valuable lesson about encumbrance.

just remember we learn as much from our losses as we do from our wins. :: ducks as everyone starts groaning and throwing mousepads and empty coke cans at her ::

V***V

In a word: Myles. Have him steal Resurrection powders and scripts everywhere you can.

I only realised how debilitating (sp?) encumbrance is just before my "late" party became "late" I discovered my rangers were both in the green and my poor bishop well in the yellow, yet apart from the colour of the "load" value I never saw any warning about their being overloaded.
