Hello all,

I have a few magic users, and rather than waste early spell picks on spells that I can buy books for, I'd prefer to save them for later/better spells. So, my question is, which spells are useful, but I can eventually buy a book for them later on? I know I have to pick a few spells, just to help my party enough to get to the point where I can buy spell books, but other than that, I'd prefer to save them (good idea? yes/no? why?) So far the spells that I thought I needed were (that I spent spell picks on, probably restarting anyway) are fireball, web, and freeze flesh. Can you buy these? If so, how long would I need to wait? It's a balance between spell selection efficiency, and then what spells you need right NOW to kill/immobilize/heal/etc.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The spell books for sale vary in each store over time, though of course so far the lower level spells are most commonly found. However, spell books are expensive, so if you want to buy good weapons and armor you may not have a lot of money left for books.

Still, I did save up some spell picks when there weren't many good spells being offered, which was nice when I had enough points for higher level spells and could pick more than one.

i have been saving one or two spell picks for later. here's a few thoughts on it.
  • if you don't pick any spells, you aren't building your skill. if you don't build your skill, you are gonna be a lame spellcaster when you DO get the good spells.
  • go thru the manual and see what spells are available when. you can plan a lot more efficiently that way.
  • prioritize/specialize. since so many others get spells later on, you can use their skills also. just remember, you have to practice a LOT with them. they have low, weenie levels and their spells are usually not the kind you can practice out of combat. either work with it or realize you don't like that, so dont count on them.

if you have a rogue, use him! early on, i let him pickpocket and shoplift till we had a nice bundle of stuff... some things i would keep: like the spell books she stole... but everything else we sold to another merchant. i was surprised that he would pull out spell books, but very happy he did.

as far as i know, ALL spell books are for sale. but you may not find them. if you are desperate "do the shopping"! LOL. that means:
~ save before you "open the shop"/talk to the person
~ see what they have. if they don't have exactly what you want, DON"T buy anything.
~ reload.
~ repeat ad nauseum until you get the book you want.
~ NOTE: as soon as you buy something, you have "closed the store". and all the reloads in the world won't change that. so be sure it's what you want.

it takes forever sometimes, and is boring as all get out, but it works. we use it in might&magic alla time, and i just found out that it's an old wizardry fave, too! ::smiles really big::

that's all i can think of at th="rament. good luck!
