Strange targeting system?

I've played the demo right through once and I'm on the second attempt. I still have absolutely no idea how to make the pc's attack specific critters. They seem to pick their own targets and there's nothing I can do to change it. A typical scenario involves pc's attacking critters that are terrorized or asleep while completely ignoring the ones that are tearing the party to pieces. The only ones I can control are the casters and even they do their own thing sometimes.
So what's the secret command to actually *control* the actions of the pc's? Or am I just a spectator? I just don't get it. Am I missing something?

Hi!

In battle, select a PC, or press its number then click on the monster you want to attack, if the PC can attack it, the monster is highlighted in GREEN if not, it is RED.
Above the monsters there are triangles in different colors, which PC is attacking it.

also, in the options, isn't there a setting toggle for "auto attack"? i think it is on by default, so if you didn't manually toggle it off, maybe consider doing that. it's worth checking.

just about everything you can think of is covered in the option pages.
