The three step plan to kill the Swallower if you fail the first time:

1. Try again, possibly using a different tactic.

2. Lower the difficulty and try again, possibly using a different tactic.

3. Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 until you have defeated the Swallower.

Seriously though, just use every magical item you've got, like powders, wands or whatever you've found, and make sure to save EVERY TIME before you cast a spell, I've lost many a battle because of a spell backfiring, bloody clumsy pixie mage......

Hello LadyAvalon!
There are a couple of strategies discussed in this thread:
what's "miscellaneous items?
The last two posts mainly...basically the object of the battle with the swallower is to just stay alive!
Kind of a tough monster for a demo, but one of the best oponents I have seen since Elyssia in W&W.

Lady Avalon, if you haven't figured out how to kill "Saffy" yet, a good defensive strategy is to get the spell "Guardian Angel" (for the Priest) and use it on the lead fighter. Have him draw Saffy's fire by attacking him first. The Guardian Angel will absorb most of the damage, with the others in the party attacking Saffy as well. The Bard's Lute works on him, too (sometimes, not always).

If you don't have "Guardian Angel", sleep around a bit (darn, that sounds BAD! ) until you fight enough random monsters to go up another level and then get it.

Good luck!

Cheers,

I have tried various methods and here is the one that works best for me. Sorry Saz, I am not a firm believer in the Guardian Angel spell. I love the effect and how it works, but EVERY time I use it, the monster I am fighting targets someone else. I use it on the fighter, and my ranger is ganged up on. The next round I use another on my ranger and my monk is the next target. After a that, I have no more spell points for healing. That leaves no time for blesses or other spells. If there was a higher level spell that would cast Guardian Angel to the whole party (or at least to the front three), I would swear by it. Only time will tell if that happens.

My method is simple. Postpone the meeting with Saffy long enough to raise a couple of levels. I do this by circling around. When I get to that room below Saffy, I just open the barred door and go through the "sewers" again. Every time I go through, there is usually at least one new group of monsters. Once my magic users are up to level 7, I camp out to rest up, cast some protective spells and charge in. I use my razor cloaks on my monk and ranger and blast him as hard and as quick as I can. My bard will play pipes while my priest blesses and my mage blasts.

I often end up with at least one person swallowed, but I usually rescue them before anyone dies.

If you do want to use the guardian angel spell and don't have it, you can always find the book. Instead of going up the ramp to Saffy, you can go straight and find the beach. To your right there is a room with all kinds of good stuff and there is always a book with the guardian angel spell there.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the good advice. Right now, I am just walking around and trying to get up a couple more levels. I don't have the Guardian Angel yet anyway.

have you discovered that odd bridge yet? if so, then in that area, if you look around, is a small room with lots of nice goodies in it. the spell book for Guardian Angel should be there.

::smiles:: good luck. just remember the higher level you are, the more monsters you will find. so it's all relative!

I know this is probably going to sound very stupid, but here goes. Yes, I have found the room. However, I can't figure out how to get in it. Seems there is a glass window and I can't find a doorway.

Just which side of that window are you on Lady Avalon - the library that you come across very early on (ie straight up the ramp from the entry and forwards) is one side, you get to the other by circling through the tunnels behind the ramp. The room that Vesselle is talking about is above the bridge (ie when you **** the you know what).

Hope that I have been explicitly vague, or should that be vaguely specific .

Thanks, I knew it was something easy that I was overlooking. I did go up there once, but then encountered you know who.
