Sauron left the opening in the side of the mountain because at times, while still having his human form he would go back there. I guess he used the power of the mountain for his own purposes. We know he could have it erupt on will so the door could have a purpose also.

Okay, here's another problem. In first movie. Gandalf was fighting with this flame balrog? on the bridge. Then they both fell down into this long and deep chasm and into the underground water. Next movie they suddenly fighting on top of a snow capped mountain. wth? How did they reach there?

Next problem is that how come Gandalf don't seem to have any magical spells? He only have light and spotlight only. How come no fireball? no magic missile? no Lightning bolt?

First question: In the book they fight for a long time at the bottom with the Balrog's flame quenched and then they climb the endless stair which the dwarves built and reach the top of the mountain, where the balrog's flame is reignited. Gandalf throws the balrog down, destroying the mountainside in the process, but he himself also dies. However he is sent back in a more powerful form to complete his mission (the mission of the Istari (wizards) was to rid Middle Earth of Sauron).

Second question: magic isn't as visible in the world of LotR as in D&D. Spells are rarely seen, they are more like long lasting enchantments and creation of magical objects.

Installing a door would have allowed him to access the volcano, while keeping people out at the same time. A lock on said door would increase levels of security. Thats door opening and closing 101 there.

So there's no reason as such then, discussed within the book (or anywhere else)?

As for the stealth issue, c'mon I'd lock the door to my home even if a burglar DIDN'T tell me to my face he was coming to rob it.

With fumes and lava coming from the volcano a door wouldn't last long.

A nice big metal door, or one made of stone even.

Perhaps a magical one?

Maybe a nice white picket fence?

If Sauron was so powerful... why didn't he simply destroy the volcano after creating the ring? that way nobody could have destroyed it!!!

SAURON:"Now Sauron rules... Ha Ha Ha..."!!!
GANDALF:"Oh... Now that sucks [that's actually Italian... it means "to have a cup of coffy with friends"]!"

Even if he could (and it's not likely that he could, Morgoth could have but Sauron never displayed that level of power) why would Sauron WANT to destroy the volcano? It was a very useful place for him.

Do you think even if he locked up that one door to the volcano there wouldn't be lots of other access points? IT'S AN ACTIVE VOLCANO PEOPLE!

As far as the overt spells... thank Dog Middle Earth isn't an Uber magic D&D-like world. Might be fun to role play such charaters but they make crappy books. (IMO) Next thing you'd want Tasslehof Burfoot added as a character (shudder!), might as well throw in Jar Jar.

Gandalf's power wasn't in overt magical display, he was a "kingmaker" (kindof like the Earl of Warwick ), he acted behind the scenes, guiding events. He obviously (indirectly referenced a number of times in the books) had a powerful 'forsight' like ability that allowed him to effectively oppose a powerful being like Sauron using relatively powerless resourses (like hobbits). You ccould keep a million ton asteroid from striking the earth by hitting it with a pebble... as long as that pebble strike was early enough.

It's like the "who was the most powerful minion of Morgoth" discussion... Sauron wasn't the most powerful individual but was definitely the most powerful if you include his ability to act independantly, lead and shape events.

I actually think Sauron was afraid of the Gandalf and the Istari... and of the elves... Bud didn't Gandalf have one of the rings of power?

Anyway there are 2 other thingsI don't understand...

1) was the great eye a "normal" eye, or did it see much more...? (for ex. Sam and Frodo hide under a ROCK from the eye... shouldn't it have noticed them?)

2) how couldn't the eye see the rings of the elves??? I mean where the hell did they hide?

And one question:

Do you think the eye of sauron might have some connection with the eye of Osiris (RA, egyptian god)???

Build a strong perimiter wall surrounding the volcano...with that essential item from the 100s A DOOR.

"Volcano..."stuff" would obviously damage the wall!"

So what? He's so mighty and powerful I'm sure he'd be able to fix the wall, even if it cost a few...bajillion orcs their lives doing so.

Admit it, Sauron is stoooopid.
