I just saw The Grudge, the new horror flick with Sarah Michelle Gellar. It's based on Ju-on, the Japanese original. This is the second Japanese horror movie remade in an American coat, at least in the last two years. The first was offcourse The Ring.

Major plusside of The Grudge: Takashi did the remake himself for the most part.
Major downside: why did he have to go and leave a complete chapter out of the movie, which IMO was a very nice addition to the overall movie?

It's a good story, nothing too fancy, but it'll do just fine. The plot of the movie and the twists also nothing too fancy, but they follow each other up pretty well. The scare in the movie lies not in gruesome images, but in shock-effects. You know, camera turning and suddenly from the dark with a shreek: A FACE!!! AAAHHH!!! hehehe
Personally I don't really like these kinds of scares, mostly because they do nothing else but give me a heart attack and I keep my eyes closed all the time

ALso, some of the scenes that were remade in the American version were not even half as good as the original ones! Seriously, I wonder what was going through Takashi's head during the making of it. And in case you're wondering why I still think why my plusside is what it is: I feel that if another director would do the movie, the atmosphere of it all would not be as intense. But maybe I'm not being objective here, seeing the original and all.

So, for people who don't mind Japanese movies, I recommend seeing the original one. For those of you who think otherwise or just fancy another horror-flick with SMG, go see the remake.

Is it true that this movie is nothing more then a remake of the ring with a slightly different premise?

Well, they are similar in many ways, including atmosphere and psychology involved. However, this one is way scarier than the Ring. The Ring is more like a detective story, trying to find out what the hell is going one and The Grudge is on a killing spree. The Grudge also features a back-and-forth timeline, like Memento. Not as sofisticated though. The Ring is just cool because of the cool video and The Grudge will keep you on the edge of your seat. Both are a must see. On a side note: The Grudge is more scarier done than Ju-on, but Ju-on has more scenes. See for yourself.

I would say that the Ring is better than this. The Grudge wasn't very scary. But if you want something similar to the Ring that is better than The Ring, then rent Scary Movie 3

Heh, interesting review, you had a different experience with the movie than the other review for it I read.

the most telling statement is: It would help if there were something the characters MIGHT do to save themselves in some way, because then that would mean there's an actual conflict or an evolution in the story. Without that, it's just watching a group of idiots march into a meat grinder.

Does the reviewer mean that the characters don't do enough to save themselves from the grudge? I think that's the whole point of it. You can't escape it. It's death defined that's out to get you, what can you do? Well, in the end they figure something out and they perform the deed and the curse is stopped .... or is it? MUHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!

Sorry, couldn't help it
