Is there an order folks would recommend to take before the Chess Match? First I cleared out the Ice room, then the Slime room, then the Air room, that left the Fire room and those Phoenix Guards. I snuck in there with Coran using a ring of invisibility so he could scout it out. There appear to be two of them wandering around him there.

When my whole party entered we attacked and appeared to wipe one out quickly. But then it seemed as though they just kept spawning as more would appear.

What was strange is that my party entered the room: PC, Imoen, Kivan, Jaheira, Coran, Xan. Somehow Xan was transported to the chess game while the rest of my party was still in the room with the Phoenix Guards. Seems like a glitch.

What's a good method to take these guys out?

Let me know your thoughts, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You could try to get someones fire resistance to 100 or more. it's possible by using spells and potions and maybe the ring of fire resistance. Then send in that person (a tank of course) and let that person alone deal with them. That character won't sustain a lot of damage because of the fire resistance. If it's above 100 it will actually heal him.

Thanks for the advice. I actually went at it last night from an older save and tackled the rooms in this order: Ice, Ooze, Fire, Air.

I am a stickler for having my entire 6-person party survive so it took me a few tried and was able to beat them with minimal damage. I used a Haste scroll to speed up my party which helped.

I wasn't aware that you could cumulatively boost resistance like that. Should come in handy.

Thanks!

Personally I like to do the ooze room last. I have one person with a super AC tank the ooze, while a mage tosses out fireballs from a wand. After a few, I buff up for that chess fight, and finish off the ooze.

For the phoenix guards, I try to hit them with as much missle fire (magic arrows, +2 throwing axe, Magic Missles, etc) as I can while they're at range. You've got the IDEAL party for that (although my advice is all too late, I see.) They really seem to have a screwy spawn chance, though. Sometimes I only take down 1 or 2, sometimes 7 or 8.

You can buy it from the inkeeper in Ulgoth's Beard. It's PRICY, though.

Mahokenshi is correct. Having a thief with a ring of invisibility is a good thing.
