OK....so if we're here in this forum, it's a fairly safe bet that we're gamers. Or at least that we play BG2.
My question to you: how many of you also read? And I don't mean things like game manuals, i'm talking actually read. Personally, i've always been right into the Fantasy Genre, I was reading long before I began gaming. Aside from reading Salvatore's (I think it was him) series on Drizzt Do'urden and the Underdark, I own many other books and have read many more. PRobably too many to write down here ![]() Among my favorites: Sara Douglass; Ian Irvine; without fail, we have Tolkein; All of Weis' and Hickmans' novels, although particularly the 5th gate cycle (was that it?) Anyway, on a final question: does anyone here also write? ------------------ The meek shall inherit the Earth. But the strong shall reclaim it as their own. ![]() |

Ive always read a lot of books in the fantasy genre. Ive always wanted to write, but it seems I never get around to starting anything. Is anyone else the same way?

Uh-huh, I love reading. I like fiction (something in Agatha Christie's style), fantasy (yes, Wheel of Time is great; and almost anything by Glen Cook), and, of course, I love a lot of books that are hard to define by genre... Actually my favorite (well, "almost favorite" since it's difficult to choose the only one) writer is F. Scott Fitzgerald...
As to writing... I do not write stories or novels, but I write articles since I work as journalist ![]() ------------------ Tanda, Assassin White Dragoness of The Dragoons Of The Wind [This message has been edited by Tananda (edited 10-30-2001).] |

This is a great topic, but it's probably better in our Fantasy Books forum. Please visit, I'd love to see more people there talking about AD&D, Tolkien, and other fantasy books (you can talk about sci-fi too if you want).

I read and storytell, which is a verbal tradition that pre-dates and includes rpg's back to the roots of human culture. I love books, especially any well-written fantasy and sci-fi that expand the possibilities and are open to imagination. I seek the same qualities in games. Engaging stories, great art, interactivity and fun.
The mention of IW as a gaming forum led me these thoughts: I play as dungeon master in AD&D, have for many years, and have oft wondered how many, if any writers use a dm's storytelling model in order to flesh out story ideas for a novel or even short story. I have quite a few notes of many "gametime" years of various events, plots and character reactions. My writing talent is very young, so I have yet to try to put some of the more original stories and charaters that were roleplayed pnp style over the years into a book format. I know a few players who wrote books about thier characters and included story elements from actual roleplays, but none of these are published yet. Also since D&d is a social game, I wonder if any gaming groups have collectivily written thier roleplays into a book form story. I have discussed doing this with a current gaming partner, but activities like writing books are a great committment that I dont have time for, yet. Books kick ass!!!! I can only read more ![]() |
