Dalamar, I agree with you - Weis and Hickman were able to introduce a basic level of humanity to their characters. I was curious about the state of the Dragonlance world now. Do you feel that the Age of Mortals has that same magic about it (well, obviously not literally!) than the previous ages?

I've also just finished the latest instalment in the Gotrek and felix novels (vaguely based on King Gautrek's Saga (Danish in origin I believe)). It wouldn't have been too bad if I hadn't seen a character in the first chapter and said "spot the traitor". I was, unfortunately correct. I only failed to forsee two plot developements but I wasn't far wrong. I've re read chunks of The True Game again and am talking myself into finishing the only two David Gemml books that I haven't finished yet, "Waylander II" and "Sword in the Storm". I generally like Gemmel, Moorwood, Lawhead (Stephen), and various others, I might re read Rowan by Anne Mc'Caffrey, a Sci Fi novel in wich telepaths steer ships and all sorts of things happen.

It's not one I'm reading at the moment, but I can recommend Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's The Mote In God's Eye. I recommended it to Ramon in Ziroc's tv thread on the GD forum. Couldn't remember the authors at the time. Good science fiction book as he requested, but one with a whole lot of human interest and some very interesting questions/observations. It's about a high tech society and it's "first contact" with another isolated species. Very well done and I am happy to suggest it to you all for reading.

Ok and another one, Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game" (there are several books in this theme, but this is the key one). I know this is a FANTASY forum...but I figure anyone who reads Asimov or Bradbury as some have mentioned, also like science fiction....so, another book I'd heartily recommend (TO YOU RAMON for sure, if you see this!!!) is the one above. I have to tell you that I got it by mistake from a book club many years ago and I still remember the basic story and some very strong emotional responses to this book. INCREDIBLE. This is not light reading. Not at all. There were some things that were very disturbing, at least for me. Basic premise is that we are at war way off in the future..Andrew (aka Ender) is drafted to battle college at a tender age and he is trained in state of the art techniques. Story is about the war/society and also about the human being- Ender and what he endures psycholgically. It had a big impact on me. Again, a dark one and I'll admit it isn't one I'd sit down and read again just for fun. I'll do Xanth or a good light romance for that. But for powerhouse hit you where it counts reading, Orson Scot Card is the ticket.

Well, about 5th age, i believe that the original idea was good, but the way Jean Rabe introduced this idea in her books was a huge disapointment.Very few of her characters have any character at all! I believe that 5th age in the hands of Weis & Hickmann would become a masterpiece. Krynn is definately changing, this is not bad, nothing ever stays static and dlance (although is fantasy) makes no exception.Jean Rabe's books are not so good (in the first one i got sleepy! this is the first time that something like this happens to me with a dlance book!) but i encourage everyone to read them because this way you will have the opportunity to read the War Of Souls trilogy which is absolutely a masterpiece! (the 2nd book is to come in April 10) i haven't felt such anticipation for a book since the time i was waiting for DoSF
![]() Take a look if you want with some dlance forums to see what i'm talking about ![]() Dalamar |

I would also recommend "Divers Hands" by Darrel Schweitzer.(1979 from The Years Best Horror Stories Series VII, I discovered it in Cosmic Knights, an anthology edited by Isaac Asimov). It's a very Ravenloft esque tale set in Medieval Greece. Damned good if the Nekatu didn't take quite such a rediculous final form but it's a bloody good read (even if it's an adaptation of various Irish folk tales that rip off The Cyclops chapter from The Odyssey). Read it if you can.

Dafan, read the Robin Hobb's Ship trilogy ! It is a masterpiece !
![]() I am a book devourer, anyway, so I have read a LOT of Fantasy books. My favourite Fantasy authors : Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, Raymond E. Feist, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks (yes, him !), M.Z. Bradley, Jennifer Roberson (especially the Tiger and Del series), Weiss & Hickmann (the Death Gates series is an absolute must !), Robin Hobb of course. Also Zelazny. Maybe I have forgotten some ... ------------------ ![]() The world is my oyster ! |
