I wanna play a 2 char party. Ok so can anybody give me some help with what NPC I should take along. I have no idea what my main char will be yet.(Prob a Mage/Thief or Fighter/Thief or Thief/Cleric or even a Sorcerer)

I use the BG1TuTu - NPC banter - Finch NPC - Indira - NPC add ons. I am looking for a good story from the NPC banter between the main and NPC.
Keep in mind that I am still a newb. I currently have 5 NPC's I find it to many chars so little exp.

Me male swashbuckler lvl 3
Imoen swashbuckler lvl 3 (she really wants to dual class bad)
Khalid wizardslayer lvl 4
Jaheira fighter/druid lvl 4
Finch cleric/librarian lvl 4 (don't know how long she stays yet)
Xan sorcerer lvl 4 (you know where I am)

Oh no power-gaming. I would like a challenge but not crazy.

Thanks

The main problem with soloing OR small(2-3) parties is the Enchantment school of magic. A Sirine can cast a powerfull 'confusion' spell, or a 'dire charm', and your party is toast. And those 'Clarity' potions ain't cheap. Other than that, any character or race can solo or duo, you just need to make proper use of the appropriate potions(that's why they were put in the game).

From what little experience that I have gained playing this game, a solid 2 person party (aiming for max versatility) is a PC cleric/ranger and Imoen dualed to mage at level 6. This allows for a tank, healer, thief, and mage, and with quick leveling up you should have a pretty solid party. I personally had a blast with this, my PC would summon undead as Imoen casts stinking cloud, and the fight was practically won before it started. Certainly a good pick.

Another idea (though I haven't tried it) is a PC fighter/thief and Quayle, or a PC cleric/mage and Montaron, allowing for the above level of versatility. However, as ElfBane said you should be able to go through with just about anything.

hmm

you say you've installed Finch (cleric) and Indira (fighter/mage)?

presumably you want to use both of those so with your PC that makes 3 people - still very managable

i'd say a thief or fighter/thief with that party - halfling for preference

Thanks ElfBane,Marty4,and Armen.

I am going to try these. ElfBane thanks for the heads up. I will keep it in mind.

Marty4 hmm they sound like fun. My problem is I can never make up my mind.(too many options to choose from)

Armen yes I have them in my game but I am going to try different NPC's. I want to have a male / female party cuz I have the banter installed also.

This is a GREAT forum!!!! You all are VERY helpful. THANKS AGAIN!!!!!

I'd choose Imoen. Dualled to a mage means she can cover thieving and magic duty. (You don't really need a mage until later on anyway, and with two party members you'll be dualling her quite early).

For the PC you need fighting, and you'd like healing. the C/R already mentioned is a decent choice, a straight paladin might do well too. Other choices might be a dwarven or gnomish F/C (as already mentioned you're really going to want good saving throws). A fighter (or ranger) dualled to cleric might be a very good choice too.

I did the whole game with two self made characters, a fighter dualled to illusionist, and a thief dualled to fighter. Only fight that gave me big problems was the final one, and I only beat that by being very cheesy.

Paladin's have the saving throw bonus as well, not as good as dwarves, gnomes, and halflings, but it covers more things (+2 to all saves, as opposed to +1 per 3.5 Con points to poison/staff/rod/wand/spell) the healing of a paladin isn't great, but combined with the special abilities you get normally you'll be in good shape. and at the top end of the exp chart you get to cast some spells of your own.

In a Tutu game, Rangers will be able to reach the level at which they start gaining spells, but Paladins will not.

My understanding is that halflings and dwarves get +5 to spell and poison and gnomes get +5 to spells. Regardless of constitution. I know that AD&D rules say it's +1 per 3.5 points, and I think that the manual says the same, but I read that it was implemented as a simple +5, and this matches my observations. (Which is to say I haven't tested it).

Anyway in BG1 you will hardly ever have to make a save that isn't vs spells or poison. And failing the poison saves is bad, but generally not critical. Failing the numerous 'hold person' and 'charm person' saves is disastrous with a small party, so ave ve spells is the saving throw that will help the most. That said, I agree that paladin/Imoen is a pretty good choice.
