After completing Durlag's Tower, I returned to Ulgoth's Beard tired and worn and hoping for some rest only to be attacked by a bunch of cult people. After disposing of them, I was then asked by some dwarf to find the rest of them and stop them releasing their god, so off I went, fought my way inside and went downstairs to fight the monster. Well hopefully you'll have done this so that was just a recap. But I can't defeat the monster, within seconds of entering the room most of my party are held and a few, dying. My plan has been to try and occupy the monster with my own summoned monsters while I try and get rid of the rest of the cult people so the monster has noone to morph into when you destroy its current form, but the dying thing has already finished off a lot of my party by then. Magic doesn't seem to affect it. So any help, advice or strategies would be welcome.
Cheers

The "Dying" thing is caused by the Balor's Death Gaze. Death Gaze is a gaze Attack. What do we do against gaze attacks?

The Death Gaze allows a Save, the Balor has only a finite amount (and he uses them up in the first few rounds), and your entire party does not have to go downstairs at the same time.

If someone does fail their Save against the Death Gaze, the "Dying" effect can be Dispelled (oddly enough), provided you do it within 1 or 2 rounds.

You can go downstairs and absolutely nothing will happen if the Cult Priestess can't see anybody to talk to.

I suggest no strategies. I merely state facts, leaving the imagination and forethought up to you.

Well, technically you asked a rhetorical question further up...

Anyways, back on topic - if you're still stumped after thinking about all those, you might find that Thalyntyr(sp?) and Halbazzar Drin can help you out.

Thanks for the tips..
I used arrows of dispelling to stop the dying problem, and kept the daemon busy with summoned monsters while I kiled all the people around the edge. It took a few attempts but eventually I defeated it and got a hefty sum of experience for my efforts. One last question.. What level approx. should my party be on by now- I've completed all the missions at Ulgoth's beard and am about to return to Candlekeep to deal with the Iron Throne leaders. My party are around level 8 though some are higher. What level should I be aiming to finish the game on?

Oh, you're fine, trust me. You won't find anything tougher than Durlag's Tower and Aec'Letec. If you can beat them, you're strong enough to finish the game.
