Hm.. with a Fighter/Ranger/Wizard you get a 20% XP penalty. Which is a shame, especially if you only really use one of the three classes.

No he does not. For a human, the highest level class is ignored for the purpose of determining the multiclass penalty. His highest is Fighter, so that is ignored, leaving Ranger 1/Wizard 1. These two classes are within one level of each other, so no penalty.

If you started as a wizard at first level, you would have gotten a wand of frost with unlimited charges (I call it the wand of unlimited chest opening, since it's really not worth much else). Otherwise, depending on which is cheaper, either buy the wand of missiles or energy arrows. That was the only use I had for a bow in the game when I played a fighter. Fighters really do not have much problem with anything else in the game other than traps (once you get out of Chapter 1, you will hit traps that you cannot avoid on floors; best bet is to either jack up reflex save or have extra healing potions).
