A VERY neat item not working.....

I just found this item, which I do not doubt to be the best armor in the whole game. It is called the Robe of Abyss and I found it in Shi-something's polar dungeon, Ulgoth's Beard, TotSC. The item gives +5 AC, 25% Magic Res, +5 Saving Throws and whatnot!

The problem is that it is simply displayed in red, and therefore unusable. It says:
"Only usable by:
Mage(single-, dual- or multiclass)
Evil-aligned characters"
but being a Neutural Evil Fighter/Mage/Thief, I should be above these restrictions.

Does anyone know what's up with that?

Hi Uss.
At first I didn't recognise the item you described, but if you have found it in the Ice Dungeon then it ought to be a Magic Robe for NEUTRAL characters, You should already have a similar Robe for Evil characters that is/was worn by Davearon in the Cloakwood Mines. I think these Robes are rated with AC=5, not AC +5, so they are good but not that good. You didn't say which version of BG1/TOTSC/BGT/..... you have, but as far as I know the item you described is not quite what it appears to be. Please give more info so someone can give you a complete answer

You mean Robe of the Good/Neutral/Evil Archmagi? Davearon has the evil one, you can buy the good one in High Hedge from Thalantyr, and I suppose the Robe of the Abyss or whatever you found is the neutral one? [img]graemlins/1ponder.gif[/img]

It *sounds* like the Robe of the Evil Archmagi... If it is, you should be above such restrictions, yes. And I'm sorry, I don't remember it being on that island... But to be fair, it's been quite a while.
I still think I'd remember a Robe of Abyss.

I am sorry for not specifying(though I am suprised to see so many replies).

I have TotSC + latest patch + DSotSC + BG Harder Patch. By the information gathered by what you guys said, it is most likely that this used to be a robe for neutral characters or such but modified by one of the TeamBG mods I have. I retrieved it from a mage that was with 2 others - The first people to meet me inside the Ice Dungeon.

I'm pretty sure this isn't your ordinary Robe of the Evil Archmagi. It was a significantly enhanced version of it. It's effects included +5 AC(not AC 5), Saving Throws +5, Increased number of spells +2 to lvls 1-5, +1 to lvls 6-9(the numbers might have been slightly different, but I'm sure it went up to lvl 9) and -30% Constitution.

This item sounds ridicolously powerful, but then again, that's why I want it

Hello again Uss. Sorry about the confusion but not many of us have DSOTSC installed, so sometimes we get caught out by the modified items. Hope someone can sort this out soon, otherwise you could try the Teambg forums.

Edit - after posting this I found an Italian website for DSOTSC items, with a description of the Robe. I used an on-line translation which said "only for bad wizard" so why doesn't it work?

Oh that explains it. He might be an evil wizard, but certainly not a bad one

I also found the same site, but didn't understand what that means.
